Ambercross Junction visit - 16mm NGM Kent group

It has been a while since I met up with the 16mm NGM Kent group, however, a local line recently opened so I was fortunate enough to be invited to run my Roundhouse Silver Lady:



The SSP slomo attracted a fair bit of attention so I only took a few pictures:

An amazing line created by the owner and I like the paint job on his Lady Anne which was done by him. I wish I had this much space!

Glad you had a great time Tom - I'll have to pluck up the courage to come along to one - I think I may go to one of the winter steamings first indoors on the circuit - by then I should have RC fitted to the Millie

No need for courage Mark, you would be very welcome.

R/C is useful for open days as there are other locos running at the same time and you never know when you may need to make an 'emergency stop' to avoid hitting one of them!

Your loco does run beautifully Tom, and the line looks amazing. I particularly like the water mill with the mill pond above, and the weir.
Re your other comment, I do have that much space, I just don't have that much planning consent!

I agree. Looks like water is a strong feature in this garden. Works well ....

Tom, A quick question, don't know if you can answer... what is the viaduct made of? It looks cast but if its homemade cast concrete its brilliant!

I asked the same question and it is a concrete cast which I believe a fellow 16mm Kent member made for him.

I think you are talking about the green loco 'Linda' as the owners loco is the Lady Anne.

As to why the cylinders are at this angle I do not know but as this is the same on the prototype:

I am given to understand that this design is better for engines that are used on gradients, it is the same on the DHR B Class (which are not that dissimilar to Linda/Blanche/Charles).

I think it is something to do with how the valves operate regarding cut off as there is less of a need to make fine adjustments when running in these hard conditions.

I may be wrong.

It is all down to wanting the biggest possible cylinders in the narrowest possible width. Mounting the cylinders at an angle allows them to be attached to the smokebox instead of the frames, with the former being narrower than the latter. You will also notice another odd thing: the connecting rod attaches to the rear crank pin inside the coupling rod, again to reduce the width. This was not a common arrangement and I can only think of Blanche/Linda/Charles and Midland Railway 4-4-0 Compounds that were like this.
