Sorry guys I didn't mean to start up a discussion about live steam. I was only making a joke (I thought) about it. I've become more interested in wagons and coaches lately and found the article more enjoyable to read than I was expecting. Also in the photographs I thought the garden and railway looked particularly nice as well.

I certainly took it as a joke. A problem with email and forum posts is there's always the risk of misinterpretation. A face to face quip has the added bonus of body language to contextualise any utterance. I suppose that's why I sometimes append a Smiley - to reassure folks that my comment is intended to be light-hearted  They can act as the contextualising body language.

I well remember a colleague taking serious offence at a tongue in cheek comment I made in an email which I circulated to the world at large in those days when I used to work for a living - it was when smileys were just coming in as apparently random collections of punctuation marks. ;-}

Well just got this months Garden Rail Magazine and this is another one of ge-riks articles and I have to say I haven't been disappointed. Well done Rik on another excellent article on "How to be a Scratch-Bodger". You are an inspiration to us all. You show us with just a little imagination how to achieve some many nice models.

Thanks again Rik. Hope you can and will contribute more to GRM....... :thumbright: :thumbright:

Your postal service must be a lot more efficient than mine. I was wondering when the next edition was due. The electronic version isn't up yet, either.

Aha! It arrived this afternoon. I'd forgotten what a lengthy aricle it was. I hope it's not too boring. I do hope I won't upset too many of the live steam community with my sacriligious after thoughts. :?

I think you chaps are quite fortunate receiving the mag this early, I realise that you must be subscribers and should enjoy the early privileges but my gripe is that I have a digital subscription and for some months now this has not been available until the planned publication date. In fact last month I didn't receive notification until after the publication date. Rant over!

Interesting. The first article in the mag is by David Mercer about his very fine Springfield Railway. He has an impressive array of scratchbuilt locos from around the world, including some magnificent beasts from the Lough Swilly. Although he started with live steam, the majority of his locos are now battery electric steam outline, which he prefers to live steam. That's quite reassuring - I thought I was ploughing a lonely furrow in the UK.

It's not that good Rik...  No it's ok really, at least it comes in the morning and not late afternoon like it was at our old address, even though we are about half a mile away.....

Got an email this morning at 01.36 showing the electronic version...........

A great magazine this month, so much relevant and interesting content. I would suggest that I now look forward to Garden Rail more keenly than SMT!

I agree, my SMT doesn't arrive sometimes and GR has far more content in my view.

Sorry it's been sometime since I last posted on this thread. But again January's Garden Rail has some very interesting builds of stock and how someone went about building their line, for me, a very well built one indeed. The line in question is "Bayfields". It shows what can be achieved in a very small space. So those of us who are limited to some space, can hopefully gain some inspiration from the article.

There are other construction articles on building a Bole Laser Craft Station, a Kerr Stuart Diesel, some Lineside Hut coaches and my favourite of four 2P's Steam Locos.....Although they are Gauge 1 and 45mm, it doesn't distract from a very nice looking steam loco.

Sounds interesting, thanks Rod!

I don't usually buy Garden Rail, but if there's an article on building a Kerr Stuart diesel, which I'm in the early stages of doing, then i might make an exception, particularly if some of the other articles are interesting...

Cheers,

Andrew.

Just got this months copy and wow, again another absolutely brilliant article from ge_rik. His article on the building of the Beeston Brewery is so well explained and photographed. It just inspires you to go out and build something yourself. It does me anyway.

There is also some more excellent reads on construction and "How a Line was Electrified". There is a superb article also on a line a lot members will know...The Old Cuckoo Light Railway. A really excellent read.

Lots of other stuff too....

I need to say, that I don't have any affiliation with the magazine. I just find it an excellent magazine on Garden Railways.

Ah, guess I missed the issue with the Kerr Stuart diesel build in then? I did look in Smiths on Saturday, but GR wasn't on the shelf...

Maybe I'll treat myself to this month's edition and Rik's brewery build...

Cheers,

Andrew.

To be honest Andrew, I have never seen the magazine in any newsagents. I have it delivered and also online. But I may give up the online one. It was one of those moments when I thought "Just in case"....

Thanks Rod. The article has turned out quite well even though I was worried it might be a bit too wordy - I even made the front page!

Hi Andrew. I knew the article was due to come out today and so popped into Smiths but they only had last month's on display. If I'd known, I could have picked it up for you. Fortunately, I get a complimentary copy which was awaiting me on the mat when we got home.

I have a digital only subscription which I know is not to everyone's taste but it suits me with my tablet orientated lifestyle. However it never seems to be available online until the publication date as specified in the previous month's edition, whereas the printed subscribers seem to get their copies a few days in advance. Is it just me or do others have this issue? I'm not complaining as its always a good read when it arrives, but I always thought that one of the advantages of a subscription was the benefit of an early copy.

I also have the digital version and it always comes out a few days later, it's not a problem, but I will be stopping it once the current subscription expires..That's if I remember then.

Just received May's Garden Rail Magazine, by heck it's a lot thinner this month. I would have thought it would be a lot fuller. But I suppose it's because of these difficult times. Think when I have done sorting the garage out, which is becoming a bit of a tiresome job! I will get around to contributing with something.

Had a quick flip through and there is some very interesting articles to have a read of.

When the Covid-19 stuff happened, lots of advertisers decided to hunker down and stop advertising - something that has happened to all the media causing some (non-railway) titles to stop publishing. Fortunately, there is no sign of that happening to GR at the moment. In fact, we've actually added a couple of new advertisers to the pages!

Another problem is that with the closure of WH Smith, newsstand sales have unsurprisingly dropped. Again, that's hit every specialist magazine. Subscriptions are up though, as are digital sales, and we're doing some deals to encourage this.

The good news is that I've also been able to hang on to nearly all the editorial pages, so there with a few design tweaks, there is just as much to read. I've no shortage of material for future issues at the moment, but if anyone is feeling like contributing, drop me a line using the contact addresses in the magazine.

Thanks
