Mind you when it comes to naming cars I have had quite a few that have been given names that start with "You....." :D

Mine have carried names taken from the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Dicken's book Oliver Twist. Right now I roster 2 engines. An LGB/Aster that carries its as given name of Frank S. And I just got my old Roundhouse Bertie back. She currently carries the name of St Christopher. But the plates are to large and look out of place. I have a set with a red background for "Smaug" that I might use. Going to finish the engine to look similar to dougrail's Fennec, might even try to build a clone in 45mm gauge. Hope Doug doesn't mind. His work on Fennec is what got me to get a Bertie, and the desire to get it back once I had the funds. Mike the Aspie

Hello my first post on here so I probably shouldn't be commenting, but for my locomotives it is planned to use the forenames of my Grandparents who are no-longer here prefixed either "Sir" or "Lady" it'd just be a nice memory for myself.

I haven't decided if I will make a distinction between Diesel/Electric vs Steam locomotives as of yet. I might throw in a couple of Royal Navy Warships as well for good measure! :-D

Gary,

You're as entitled to comment as much as anyone else. FWIW I think family names are great. In your case as a memory or tribute, or as in mine, to involve the family in my hobby. Royal Navy Warships were done by the LMS on Jubilees, and BR on the class 50s.

I have seen some strange names and have often wondered at the origins, or reasons for using them.

I hadn't thought of making a distinction between steam and diesel. I think I'll just number the diesels.

Ian

Up to present time I have named my Garratt "JASPER" as in Jasper the Garratt after the comedian of a similar name.

Still not christened the RH Katie or the little 0-4-0 diesel but guess it will happen in time.

I've acquired a second locomotive. It will be named Oscar after my second grandchild. I'm hoping my children don't give me any more grandchildren. My naming policy might turn out to be a bit expensive! :D

I name my locos With a 'IN' at the end "Goblin" is my loco for an example ( still need to order Name Plates for it)
My next loco will be a Roundhouse Billy kit with DJB whistle and Narrow Planet Nameplates "Robin" is another example of it.

I have a variety of protocols:
No 1 - ARTHUR; after my late father (Roundhouse ‘Bertie’),
No 2 - ERIC; after a late friend who introduced me to the world of 16mm garden railways (L C Models ‘Danny’),
No 3 - EILEEN MARY; after my late mother (Roundhouse ‘Silver Lady’),
No 4 - JASPER; after our previous dog, who was my faithful companion during some very difficult times (Roundhouse ‘Billy’).

If it appears that one must be dead to appear on my locos, my next one will be named after my grandson Gabriel, who is very much alive!

I agree, things must be kept fair for the sake of peace and harmony within the family.

Jim,

See my earlier post. I've bought another locomotive. It's going to be named shortly. That reminds me. I must order the nameplates.
