What's your loco naming protocol?
Re: What's your loco naming protocol?
I've acquired a second locomotive. It will be named Oscar after my second grandchild. I'm hoping my children don't give me any more grandchildren. My naming policy might turn out to be a bit expensive!

I name my locos With a 'IN' at the end "Goblin" is my loco for an example ( still need to order Name Plates for it)
My next loco will be a Roundhouse Billy kit with DJB whistle and Narrow Planet Nameplates "Robin" is another example of it.

Re: What's your loco naming protocol?
I have a variety of protocols:
No 1 - ARTHUR; after my late father (Roundhouse ‘Bertie’),
No 2 - ERIC; after a late friend who introduced me to the world of 16mm garden railways (L C Models ‘Danny’),
No 3 - EILEEN MARY; after my late mother (Roundhouse ‘Silver Lady’),
No 4 - JASPER; after our previous dog, who was my faithful companion during some very difficult times (Roundhouse ‘Billy’).
If it appears that one must be dead to appear on my locos, my next one will be named after my grandson Gabriel, who is very much alive!

I agree, things must be kept fair for the sake of peace and harmony within the family.
If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer!

Jim,
See my earlier post. I've bought another locomotive. It's going to be named shortly. That reminds me. I must order the nameplates.

I am afraid I don't do names - just numbers, and they very often are not applied so the staff give them nicknames.

Traffic Pattern? What pattern? Spuds out; grain in, but cattle, sheep and passengers are a lot less predictable.

My Live Stan Locos will be named after family members. The first, my Silver Lady, will shortly receive its ‘Lady May’ nameplates, May being my Grandma’s name.
My battery/track power locos, be that steam outline or diesel, will be named after places and things that are special to me. My Bachman Baldwin is named Cruachan after the mountain in Scotland. My Grandad worked on the Construction of the HEP power station within, something he was very proud of.

Re: What's your loco naming protocol?
Characters after my favourite comedies.
As I only have one loco technically this is just a prospective solution.
Currently Vyvyan (Young Ones) originally it was to be the girlfriend (Jemima) then she became the ex so...
But I have at least two more steam (outline) locos and tram and maybe a diesel in the works so I have a few names to pick from.
Bernard (Black Books)
Hackett (Father Ted)
Malcolm (The Thick of It)
Holly (Red Dwarf)

Re: What's your loco naming protocol?
I also only have one loco. They're expensive, aren't they? However, I do have a naming protocol that will be put into use if I ever get another one. Since I live on the edge of the Canadian barrens, I thought it might be fun to do animal names in the Inuit language.
The locomotive I have is a "Billy", and its stumpy, powerful appearance along with the big squared-off dome mounted forward of centre on the boiler in my opinion lends it somewhat the air of the hardy, hump-backed Musk Ox, which also like "Billy" is much smaller than you would think. The Inuit word for this creature is "OMINGMAK" pronounced more or less how its spelled.
The only trouble is the name plates I had made are too long for the cab sides now that the coal-bunkers have been removed so the engine is simply "#1" until I work out how to fix the plates to the boiler side.
Other animal names I like and could name a locomotive are:
Ookpik- the Owl
Tuktu- the reindeer
Tiriganiaq- the fox
Nanuq -the polar bear
Amaruq- the wolf
I also like Amaqjuak- the strong one
and Elisapie- the Inuit version of "Elizabeth"
I realize this doesn't really fit in with the provenance of the loco or rolling-stock: It's all British narrow-gauge and that's all I am ever going to model- but it's my railway and I like the words.

Good for you Keith. It is your railway, so you can do what you like and name what you like....
