7/8ths for 32mm track

Post by FWLR » Mon Sep 18, 2017 10:00 am

I have been looking at some 7/8th’s wagons and i am asking if they are able to run on 32mm track, if so how would i be able to do this if they are with 45mm wheel sets please.

Depends where you are looking Rod. 45mm is quite common as it equates to 2 foot gauge in real life. 32mm equals 18" gauge so some items are built to that. Let us know what you are looking at.

Youn can do this, I run a 32mm railway. Very exotic in Germany. It is the gauge of the 62cm narrow gauge railways, for example the Darjeeling railway.

You have some suppliers, where You can select the gauge, for exampel Swift Sixteen, IP Engineering, Roundhouse, here in Germany Regner Easy line and look to Accucraft waggons, the most are e.w. supplied with two wheel sets easy with a screw driver to change.

But You will remark, that nothing is exact 7/8ths!

Well like your reply on another thread Derek, there seems to be no point in me running any 7/8ths stock to be honest, if it clash’s with my other stuff, it would look silly, unless i ran them at different times, i.e. keep the 7/8ths stuff of the layout until i want to run it, but then any building would then be out of scale too I guess.

See where the journey takes you Rod.

If I had even realised 32mm existed when I started I would have probably gone that route. When I started to prefer industrial and light railway stock my eyes weren't happy with what looked like broad gauge skip wagons. They were as wide as they were tall! I had 45mm track so took the easy option and built bigger wagons.

My buildings are now too small and need to build a few sheds this winter to help me visualise whether I have a narrow gauge railway, or not. You could have both scales running but as you say there will always be giveaways like buildings. Where modellers do both they are often running with little else than track or at least take pictures in "open countryside" .

I have been through American G gauge, lgb European and 16mm British outline stock before settling on 7/8th so it has been quite a journey but enjoyable.
