Re: Rolling stock of the SVLR (Swansea Vale Light Railway)
Been a bit busy so not had much time to tinker. Test ran the brake van today on the track. Its almost finished, the interior is coming on, I have 3D printed a stove with a built-in LED and almost finished the rest of the interior. Pictures to follow of the interior. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/48...

Re: Coal loads
I've made my coal loads removable so I can run down the line as full and return as empty. The real coal is glued with PVA on to a plywood platform mounted on blocks ..... IMG_3136.JPG IMG_3132.JPG ..... so the load can be removed easily IMG_3167.JPG Rik That looks ace, like the idea of it being rem...

Coal loads
How do people simulate coal loads in wagons, I was thinking of breaking some up then glue in place using PVA. This would be done on top of some lead ballast for extra weight. Be good to know peoples thoughts.

Re: Rolling stock of the SVLR (Swansea Vale Light Railway)
Bit of an update on the Box Van. Finished assembly a few days ago. Gave the whole van a few coats of grey primer rubbing down lightly between coats. The main van was given a couple of coats of battleship grey. I then masked off lower chassis and sprayed it matt black. I laser cut the fake axle boxes...

Re: Rolling stock of the SVLR (Swansea Vale Light Railway)
Once this one is complete I plan to make the following:
Open coal wagon
Curved top covered open wagon
Livestock box van
3 compartment 4 wheel carriage
Observation car based on the same chassis as above.

Rolling stock of the SVLR (Swansea Vale Light Railway)
As my stock building is starting to progress I thought I would create a post to show my adventures. I have almost completed my Brake Van which can be seen here. https://gardenrails.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=11269 I have started weathering and adding decals, here is the almost finished wagon...

Re: Wheel base
I did a bit of sketching in CAD and assuming a 0.5mm clearance between flange and rail then it looks like you start to get binding if you go much above 120mm. Thanks for the advice Michael, I have been drawing a small box van today but plan to start designing a freelance 3 compartment 4 wheel coach...

I think min radius on my line is 30" at its tightest bend.

What is the maximum wheelbase you can have with a fixed 4 wheel chassis?

Re: BRAKE VAN
Nice subtle weathering job, and those letters and numbers are very professional looking. Did you set out and cut them entirely by hand? top job! Grant. Thanks all for the positive comments, it's my first full scratch build apart from some fixtures (axle boxes, wheels and buffers) as I am a newbie r...

Re: BRAKE VAN
Some updates I have cut out some decals using white gloss vinyl, before cutting I flatted back an area using 1200 grade wet and dry. Once fitted I made sure to rub the letters into the planking detail using a cocktail stick. The main body was then given an all over coat of Humbrol clear matt aerosol...

Re: BRAKE VAN
Did it all myself, luckily I have access to a laser cutter. After doing a rough sketch to flesh out some dimensions I drew it using 2D Design. Mostly cut out of 3mm laser ply and 1.5mm birch ply. I am happier now that I have resprayed it grey. Its a 95p can of Battleship Grey from Buyology, the whol...

Try this way then, hopefully, you will see the van in its first coat of green paint, I have now decided to paint it grey.

Re: BRAKE VAN
Cheers for the advice guys, I think I am going to have a go with the vinyl, I was worried it would look too crisp. I think finish coat then a tad weathering and satin coat last maybe. One thing I have decided (despite what the rest of the household think!) I am going to spray the van grey a bit like...

Re: BRAKE VAN
OK so I have had a bit of a brake, no I mean break building model aeroplanes and off on camping trips. Came back the other day, finished a few jobs needed in the garden then went in the workshop to have a play with the brake van. So I have glued the ply roof and frame together, no fancy jig other th...

Re: BRAKE VAN
The van looks good and appears to be a strong looking structure. Glad to see adequate roof beams to hold the ply in camber throughout its length. Have you found it necessary to sand the charred edges of the ply, prior to glueing. Grant. No need to sand the charred edges, I use either Zapp medium wi...

Re: BRAKE VAN
That van looks good, do Andel still produce kits? I have a few of their waggons they are very good. The consensus here is that green would be a good colour, similar to the GVT green. A few mistakes I have now realised, I have the planking going vertical on the ends whereas most seem to have to plank...
