Re: SVLR Scenery

Wow, that is a seriously serious building. :D Lovely job and once the details have been tweaked, it should look fantastic. I presume you have access to a laser cutter to do all that? I'm interested that you plan the final version to be in ply rather than mdf, I'd have thought the surface finish of ...

The design is loosely based on the GWR box a...

Good source for materials

One of our students at school is building some Architectural concept models for his A level project. He had some really good corrugated roofing sheets. I am re buidling a halt on my railway that has a corrugated roof, the previous model had corrugated card coated in yacht varnish and then paint, las...

Re: Rolling stock of the SVLR (Swansea Vale Light Railway)

First run of my new scratch built coach, I coupled it with two of my other scratch builds and a Binnie granite wagon. The test was successful under the power of my Little John AKA Loco No 4 'Eryri' Time to draw a few more coaches to go with the 3rd class coach. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4865/46...

Re: Rolling stock of the SVLR (Swansea Vale Light Railway)

That's looking very nice indeed! There's a kind of neatness to it that just "works"... I did a little laser cutting a while back, but have completely forgotten it all! I'll have to brush up on the stuff I learned back then so I can have another go - some of my files are a little untidy an...

Re: Rolling stock of the SVLR (Swansea Vale Light Railway)

Thats an amazing way of doing your roofs Jon, did you do it in go...... I am like you also Jon, only been doing railways for about 5 years, 2 on 16mm. No idea about how the daily runnings were......  Yes did roof in one go. I pre-bent the ply a bit just using my hands. I then p...

Re: Rolling stock of the SVLR (Swansea Vale Light Railway)

Lovely job all round. One tiny point, though. I think you need to mount the door handles with the head of the T horizontal not vertical. I do not remember ever seeing a closed and secured door with the handle vertical in all my years of tootling around in slam door stock with construction dates any...

Re: Rolling stock of the SVLR (Swansea Vale Light Railway)

Those door handles are amazing. Did they need much cleaning up? How do you print objects that small, it always causes me major grief. I was surprised too, printed them in PLA no cleaning needed. The shaft was 3mm D and the spigot that fits into a hole in the carriage side was 2mm D, they were print...

Re: Rolling stock of the SVLR (Swansea Vale Light Railway)

Glued the birch ply roof cladding to the frame today, rather than jigging it I decided to experiment. I clamped the ply in the vice and tightened it to get the desired curve. I then placed the roof frame in the correct position before wicking Zap into the joins and then kicking it. https://farm8.sta...

Re: Rolling stock of the SVLR (Swansea Vale Light Railway)

More progress today with the 4 wheel coach. Glued in the painted interior end panels and floor, these both have laser engraved planking effect. Glazing was added using OHP film and the interior walls laser cut from birch ply were glued in place. I have not fixed the seats in situ yet, will do that o...

Thank you, need to get the coupling sorted next and then on to painting another 2. They are incredible value for money and build up easily.

Re: Rolling stock of the SVLR (Swansea Vale Light Railway)

If it looks exactly like that 3D printing then you will be a rich man! LOL, not managed to print yet as someone else is hogging the printer with a really big print. Cracked on with finishing off my first Binnie Granite wagon, painted with cheapy rattle cans, details added using acrylic artist paint...

Re: Rolling stock of the SVLR (Swansea Vale Light Railway)

Been experimenting with Fusion 360 CAD app, today I have made a roundhouse style buffer and a coach door handle. Going to 3D print them tomorrow. In the meantime here is a render of the buffer. The buffer is not based on anything in particular. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7806/46739578812_42db192...

Taking the body of a Ragleth

So I have had a manual Ragleth for a few years, I have decided to fit RC and need to take the body off. I am assuming it is held in place by the 4 hex head screws I can see, 2 in the doorway on top and 2 underneath closer to the front. If this is the case what size are the hex heads (BA Metric or ot...

Re: Rolling stock of the SVLR (Swansea Vale Light Railway)

Been a bit busy so not had much time to tinker. Test ran the brake van today on the track. Its almost finished, the interior is coming on, I have 3D printed a stove with a built-in LED and almost finished the rest of the interior. Pictures to follow of the interior. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/48...

Re: Coal loads

I've made my coal loads removable so I can run down the line as full and return as empty. The real coal is glued with PVA on to a plywood platform mounted on blocks ..... Coal loads

How do people simulate coal loads in wagons, I was thinking of breaking some up then glue in place using PVA. This would be done on top of some lead ballast for extra weight. Be good to know peoples thoughts.

Re: Rolling stock of the SVLR (Swansea Vale Light Railway)

Bit of an update on the Box Van. Finished assembly a few days ago. Gave the whole van a few coats of grey primer rubbing down lightly between coats. The main van was given a couple of coats of battleship grey. I then masked off lower chassis and sprayed it matt black. I laser cut the fake axle boxes...
