Re: Water tank rivets problem
In sketchup the inspector identifies surface issues including "nested objects" which are the armrests which just impinge on the backrest. Trevor, Are you using the Sketchup "Intersect faces with model/selection" command? It's in both the Edit drop down and right click mouse. I c...

I am both amazed and in awe of how flat the sides look. You should be proud of that achievement if nothing else!

Re: Water tank rivets problem
I have had problems with rivets falling off. I thought I had got around it by dropping them below the surface - so I was sure they intersected the surface. Perhaps a better way is to use a guide line to encourage them to sit on the surface. I've been doing a bit of investigating myself. When I impo...

Looks fabulous. I hope you have good muscles, if not you soon will have, shifting that lot in and out of exhibitions!

100mm at 10:1 = 10.00 ie 100/10 100mm at 22.5:1 = 4.44 ie 100/22.5 100mm at 19.05: = 5.25 ie 100/19.05 22.5/19.05 = 1.18 ( conversion factor) so 1.18 x 4.44 ( dimension from 22.5 drawing) = 5.24 which should be close enough to 5.25 for your purposes as long as you use the same conversion factor thro...

Work in Progress- WHR Garratt Just come across this, he only uploaded yesterday ( 9th April) and appears to have only drawn one end so far, but it looks pretty good. Worth keeping an eye on. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4822107?collect License Work in Progress- WHR Garratt by Nathan_Ray is lice...

Re: Using OpenSCAD to produce drawings for 3D Printing
Thanks Simon, very impressive. I have looked at OpenSCAD in the past and I'm afraid that you've just confirmed what I thought, you need to enjoy computer programming to bother with it! I'm sure it is a whiz if/when you can learn it and I have seen some really superb models produced with it, but rath...

Re: Water tank rivets problem
Just out of curiosity, I put one of the original tank sides on to print before I went to bed last night. It has printed pretty well, although there seems to have been some sort of shift half way up. It's pretty subtle and I don't think I can photograph it. However all the rivets seem to be stuck tig...

Re: A Wickham trolley
I believe they were often kept in a lineside shed equiped with a miniature turntable to put them onto a siding. Yes, the turntable was a standard fitting although I can't make out where/how they carried it. I'm just about to start on the small body fittings etc and in looking at various photos I th...

Re: Kerr Stuart...ish
I must have another go at this rust technique. I have tried it in the past but was unhappy with the results. Then again, I'm never happy with my weathering. So much so that I don't bother these days, but perhaps I will have ago on the Wickham when I get that far.

Re: Water tank rivets problem
I think I've followed you! I can see the advantage of only needing to make alterations to one component for others to alter automatically if you are using multiple instances, or if you use the same component in multiple drawings. It isn't something I've found to be a limitation so far, but I must th...

Re: A Wickham trolley
So far so good and much as I had expected, but now for the bits that I didn't quite know what to do with - the sockets, the fuse, the switch and the voltage regulator. In my box of bits I found a small Voltage Reg module which was by chance exactly 15mm wide and fitted perfectly on top of the top fr...

Re: Water tank rivets problem
I've had another look at my instructions above, just in case I've not quite written what I intended. Simplified version below: I must say that I've never used components myself. I did try but couldn't get on with them and I find groups work perfectly well and can easily be modified or altered if req...

That is a work of decrepit art! I love the paint finish, brilliantly realistic. You really should do something with the inside of the cab, just to complete it, though.

Re: A Wickham trolley
So the next step was to 3D print the gearbox/chassis. No real problem with that although I had to do it several times, partly because after each prototype print I thought, "Hmm, I should have...", and partly because the issue of print shrinkage made it a bit tricky to precisely position th...

Re: Water tank rivets problem
This may get a bit long, so bare with me! How to create equally spaced multiple copies of an object such as a rivet in Sketchup. Note for illustration I've created a small block and deleted the back face to enable a view from the inside: 1) Draw a circle of the required diameter ( these are 0.5mm ra...
