TVT Goods Trucks
Spring has sprung, the grass has riz..... etc. etc. Now that the sun has returned to this neck of the woods, it has been warm and dry enough to paint the goods rolling stock that I built during winter and the TVT is no longer a tramway with more locos than wagons. The garage is now warm enough that ...

I should get those sheets of lazer cut boxcar siding I've got hanging around out and have a go at something similar. There's no such thing as too many projects. Go for it..... I've never seen laser cut matchboard siding, but it sounds better than cutting grooves in ply. Is it made in NZ, or somethi...

, getting made redundant is no fun :( Depends on the circumstances...... I was made redundant just two years before I planned to retire anyway, but I'd been there so long that the package was equivalent to three years salary. Even better, the thieves in Canberra got much less of it than if I'd kep...

It's one of mine.Annie:75232 wrote:I've always liked those Fowlers, which is saying a lot because there aren't many diesels I do like.
So can you tell us more about this particular model loco?
You'll find the story here

Meths in the UK is coloured purple (so it can be readily distinguished from clear liquids like water or alcohol) and the chemicals thrown in for this colouring and the requirement to have a visible flame can cause the green flames. Interestingly my latest batch of 5 lts of meths is colourless - not...

Re: First attempt - basic diesel
Not too sure about the driver's seat - do I mount it as shown with the driver facing forwards, or do I blank off one side of the cab and have the driver sat transverse? The sideways seating is used on small diesel mechanicals so they don't have to be turned at each end of the run. It is difficult t...

Re: Flushing out a Meths Burner
I wouldn't even attempt to guess what is put into UK meths. If you are seeing a green colour in the flame, to a chemist like me that suggests copper, which may be coming from corrosion in the piping. If you think it is the dye from the meths. building up, you may be able to shift that with a stronge...

Got an e-mail into Essel as well... Try NWSL. The IP plastic gears are 0.5mod and NWSL have 0.5mod gears listed. NWSL only have a 25t gear, instead of the 30t gear used by IP, so would need some modification to fit. Also consider their O scale gearboxes. NWSL gearboxes are reasonable quality and an...

Re: First attempts - basic wagon
Here's my first attempt at a large scale piece of rolling stock. any feed back and tips on what I should do differently on the next one appreciated! Also, hints on weathering it would help. Thanks. If that's your first scratchbuild it's very well done. Worth at least an 'Attaboy' I think. While I...

A canal with rails on each side... I'd call it a steam/hydraulic linear motor....... The vehicle would need to be very light, with low friction pinpoint bearings. It may work , although the motor in the average pop-pop boat is rated in fractional mosquito power. There is an article on building a po...

Joke aside, did Argyle once make all their own locos at one time? Gordon is still building locos., but his order list has been closed for years. My Philadelphia is one of his designs, although it was built from the kit version, not rtr. The old Argyle website is on the wayback machine and most of t...

New model of Puffing Billy NA Class locomotive
For those interested, Argyle Locomotive Works in Aust are working with Accucraft for a limited run of NA class locos in 16mm scale. http://www.argyleloco.com.au/news.htm If the drawing is anthing to go by, they will be modelled in the current preserved condition. Argyle have made the NA class before...

................ but presumably you can order it on line and get it by some means or other?? Etch primers and other solvent based paints are Class 3 Dangerous Goods. I'd be surprised if any postal service in the West would knowingly accept them. Here in Oz, it is an offence to put any DG in the pos...

Re: Time to think big, drawing request
Does anybody have a general arangement drawing then could send me so I can see if this is a viable option. There are drawings in 'The Two Foot Gauge Enigma' by Anthony Baxter, published by Plateway Press, 1998. It's been out of print for years and there isn't even a copy listed in the ABE Books onl...

I'm going to upload a couple pics for your thoughts... That's usually what you see when the solvent system of the top coat can attack the primer. It can be caused by either incompatible paint types eg. cellulose laquer applied over enamel, or by the top coat being thinned too much. FWIW, I only use...

It needs 24 hours drying time to work properly. Like you, I leave etch primer at least a day before applying the top coat. Even longer for the topcoats. A good rule of thumb is that a coat of paint isn't dry if you can still smell the solvents. It's been as cold as charity around here lately and so...

The LNWR colour is usually referred to as purple brown, although I've also seen it referred to as purple lake. The Caledonian also used it. It is a very old colour and is still available from any paint shop in Oz that stocks heritage colours. It was very popular here in the '70s under the name Missi...

Thanks GTB. Anything else, aside from gloves, face and eye masks or from there can I get painting with this stuff? Go for it.... To be honest, if you are spraying outside, even with spray cans your exposure will be very low if you stay up wind. I'm a bit paranoid about paint on the hands, as a lot ...
