That is a good idea. Not only does it give the wood a bit of protection but it also looks more like ballast than wood does, and if you do add proper ballast you have a rough surface for it to stick to.

I like it Dwayne, very impressive cave!

The only trouble I have with tidying up the heap of junk I laughingly call my workbench, is that afterwards I can never find things.

Looks good Jim, more or less exatly how I would have done it.

Interestng that you've gone for a single door instead of the original two. Presumably thats because it looks more in scale?

Re: first scratch built train

They have whatever you want to put on it. Its your loco, your railway, you say what goes.
Hwever if it was mine I'd probably have the name or initials of the railway on the tende,r and the loco's fleet number on the cabside.
Nice model btw.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?

Lovely Peter. The forecourt and railings really add a finishing touch.

I'm sure you have it in mind, but it needs a notice board with service times and the name of the Minister?

Re: 3D Printed Skip wagon

Rik, Yes it is similar. The 'acteone polish' basically consist of suspending the object in a closed container above a pool of acetone. The Acetone vapour then slowly softens the surface of the model and allows it to flow and 'lose' the layer imperfections. The difference is that being surrounded by ...

Re: 3D Printed Skip wagon

Tom : I think Peter has said it for me. Yes there is some fettling to be done and it gets tiresome sometimes. However If I were to try scratchbuilding this vehicle from flat stock HIPS, it would take me many many hours to achieve the same thing, without any guarantee that the overall effect would be...

Re: My Winter Project - 2 Car Multiple Unit

Looking good Jim. Interesting that you chose to mould the bogie sides rather than 3D print them. Presumably you decided that trying to clean up 8 complicated surface prints to a decent standard would be too problematic? Agree with your comment about the pleasures of building. I've found before that ...

Re: 3D Printed Skip wagon

Not sure tbh, Rik. Probably less strong than an ABS extrusion but I think they are strong enough to do the job though. The oval chassis frame itself is pretty strong because it is I-section and printed curved so the filaments go lengthways round it, and any internal gaps are printed as a honeycomb s...
