Locos in New Zealand didn't get brass plates with their names on as rule, mostly they were painted on their tank sides. I'm going to name the Avonside 'Ponga' which is the name of a NZ tree fern that has a characteristic unfurling frond. http://i883.photobucket.com/albums/ac31/SanctaRosa5/Railway%20...

After checking the drawing I'm using I discovered that I'd printed it off to the wrong size. Now that I've corrected that I've found that the No:2a spring motor is going to fit just fine. Mind you I'm working in 1:19.5 scale on 45mm track so your experience may differ to mine. http://i883.photobucke...

Because I'm an indoor modeller I hesitate to give anyone advice on what to do with an outdoor layout, but I think if you relay your present line in 32mm track and level it correctly you won't go too far wrong. That would at least give you a starting point and also enable you to get something up and...

After much successful hunting on various auction sites I now have an adequate supply of Meccano wheels so I won't need to risk life and limb looking for spent shotgun shells during duck hunting season ;) From what I can understand from the esoteric art of Meccano identification the nice red spring m...

Well that expains a lot about why that coach looked so odd with its clear-storey. At first I thought it must be something that had been dumped on top of its roof or was a part of another coach that was stored behind that particular coach. Like you I'm surprised how tiny that coach is and it certainl...

Thanks Steve :) I sold the loco a while ago which I still kind of regret, but when I built the 14xx I made a steel template for marking out the cab roof, cab sides and tank sides all in one piece. I still have it somewhere which means that it wouldn't be too difficult to build another 14xx if I wa...

When I made the 10mm scale one I basically used a small pair of tin snips, a pair of smooth jaw pliers, a fine toothed file and a pencil torch. It wasn't too difficult to do, but then on the other hand before that I'd been working in P4 making tiny 19th century colliery locos so I suppose after doi...

Tinplate Girl Side-dump ore car.

They are to 7/8th scale, but I would imagine that it would be straig...

Yes I was looking at that roof and wondering why it was like that. I started to look at some of the pictures in the railheritagewa collection yesterday afternoon and was amazed at what an incredible resource it is. Pack a lunch and a thermos before going in though because it's difficult to stop expl...

Brilliant David. What an amazingly useful photograph! Thank you so much for finding this photo for me. There is just so much useful detail in this photograph I can use. Ha! - the wriggly tin brake van shall go to the (tramway) ball afterall. And as you say David that coach is so very close to what I...

Lego hopper wagon as a temporary solution?
I own a humungous amount of Lego and it struck me today that the hopper wagon I built for my now defunct Lego train layout would work out just fine for use on the mining tramway until I can do something about building something permanent. Please forgive the rotten cell phone pictures. Maybe if I dro...
