Re: Merlin Locomotive works history

Thanks for the response Ian. Does the mold masters include the one that made the pony truck detail part with the springs? I am missing on, so right now the pony truck has none on it as the other fell off and is sitting on my bench waiting for me to reattach it with some epoxy. She runs as good as sh...

My Merlin SLR #85 Hunslet

Picked this up from Anything Narrow Gauge, well FedEx brought it to me in the USA. Nice old early production Merlin(works number 74) SLR/W&L Hunslet. According to Simon, it was personally delivered by Mr Cooper to the customer, where it then sat under his workbench for a couple decades. The cust...

Re: Merlin Locomotive works history

I just officially joined the Association, hopefully they will start me with that issue with part one of the article. if not, hopefully I can get it as a back issue. I just test steamed my Merlin SLR #85 Hunslet as the Fedex man woke me up with a big package for me from the UK. She is build number 74...

Re: Merlins Castle Line

Just got caught up with all your progress. Beautiful Merlin live steamer, btw if you need parts or help, Simon over at Anything Narrow Gauge is pretty sharp when it comes to the old Merlin locos. Once you have them running good they usually will. I might have missed it, did you get the pressure gaug...

Merlin Locomotive works history

At one time, Ian Pearse was talking about a article(s) he was working on to tell the backstory from his perspective of his time at Merlin Locomotive Works, I believe it was for 16mm today. Has this ever been published yet? I have been in and out of the 16mm world and being stateside, I dont get to t...

Re: Sierra Leone Railway coaches?

A year out is fine for me. Gives me time to replenish the train funds over the winter months. I will be looking for the updates when those get closer to becoming a reality. Thanks for the post. Mike

Has anyone ever made kits for the ex Sierra Leone coaches that are used on the W&L?

Re: Merlin Mayflower and...

Great looking old Mayflower. Welcome to the quirky world of Merlin live steam locomotives. I have owned a few and am getting ready to buy another one here in the next day or so. While not as detailed as more modern offerings, they have a quaint 16mm narrow gauge appeal to them that is hard to match....

Re: New Live Steam Owner

Welcome to the world of live steam. One upgrade guys tend to put on these and many other engines is a replacement safety valve from Anything Narrow Gauge. These are made in the USA by the leader of my local steam group, then Jay K from The Train Dept works with Simon to get them to the UK. They are ...

Re: Built up my new Regner Paul tram kit

I find most all of the Regners I have owned needed an air collar to fine tune the burner to light easily. Regner has a nice one listed on their website but it seems few dealers outside of Germany stock it. I made my own from a piece of thin sheet metal Mike the Aspie

A Gronk in 5" gauge

A good friend is down sizing his collection in preparation for a possible move and was looking for a home for this odd ball(in the states that is) 5" gauge Gronk. Everything in the states is 4 3/4 inches instead of 5 inch gauge. The engine comes with a little bit of track he said. Will need two...

Built up my new Regner Paul tram kit

And I enjoyed nearly every moment of it. I was missing 2 parts, both gland nuts for the sight glass. So for now I am running without one and just blank plugs in the slight glass spots. So short runs of 5 to 8 min so as not to run the boiler dry while I wait for replacement parts. Really a nice model...

Re: Gauge 1 ‘project’

Here is a pic of her on the bench, railway is mostly mud and trackwork needs some leveling and joints unkinked for gauge one running. Mine will be getting SDJR transfers from Barrets in the UK, so its in the deep blue color now. I am planning to get a complete new smoke box assembly as this one is a...

Re: Gauge 1 ‘project’

Very nice workmanship!! Wish whoever in the UK that built the Project I have would have done that kind of work, and only wish I had the tools and skills to remake a few things like the whole cylinder block assembly. Mine was poorly done and looks like a hack job compared to your fine work. Keep the ...

Re: Cold weather steaming in the USA

Thanks, the doggies are well used to trains being run. I still like my Mayflower over even my friends Lilla. it just looks "right" when it comes to the typical British narrow gauge engine. I put a Roundhouse Leek & Manifold engine on order at RH, but its not due till Feb 2022! its just...

Cold weather steaming in the USA

With the temp at 36'F, a friend and I did some 16mm narrow gauge steaming in the USA today. He brought over his Roundhouse Lilla and I ran my Merlin Mayflower named Smaug. Great plumes but cold hands. Thankfully both have RCS palm transmitters, so we could keep them and our hands in our jacket pocke...

Pearse engines

Does anybody know how many, if any, of the Europa and Ithion European style engines were made? I am guessing not many as I cannot say I have ever seen one other than the pics in my catalog. I am hunting one to buy, or one of the their generic UK style engines like Auric or Genesis. Just has to be 45...

Re: What are the best options for fuel for G Scale gauge 1 locomotives

For those in colder climates, alcohol doesnt really care how cold it is. But butane, even the Iso-butane mix gas doesnt like real cold weather. I steam my gas fired models on the top of the stove, then once up to pressure I would carry them to the railway(elevated) with oven mitts. AD

Re: Roundhouse Fowler

You are doing well, just keep at it. Its self beneficial, the more you run the better you get at it. At home, I can turn the gas right down to near silent and keep it that way. But at shows, with all the background noise which is very overwhelming for someone on the autism spectrum, I struggle to ke...

Lockdown steaming at home

With our steam groups late winter and spring steam ups all canceled. As soon as weather premitted, steaming commenced on my railway. I took delivery of a RH Lady Anne from John Sutton as the lay off from work killed the budget for a new Davenport model from RH. Here are a couple videos, one of my La...
