Re: How to add rust finish?
Thanks very much for your reply. That is another product that I hadn't seen before. The instructions for the Slater's wagon (that I will be using it on) mention 'Instant Rust' and I have seen another product called 'Metal Effect Rust Finish'. I might have to have a play with them to see which ones w...

Re: Coaches for Roundhouse Models
Just wondered if you'd got yourself sorted? Rik I bought 3 of the Victorian coaches from Jerry Irwin, although they are at my parent's house so I haven't seen them yet. I'm probably going to buy a couple more and his customer service was excellent. I didn't hear back from Bowaters after they posted...

Re: Slaters Wagon Build and Kit Bash
So, I thought that swapping the wheels over would simply be a case of buying the different wheels but it's not quite that easy. The top photo shows the difference between the double-flange wheels and the single-flange wheels. The double-flange ones have metal bushes and they are a slip fit over the ...

Slaters Wagon Build and Kit Bash
I have just taken delivery of a bunch of Slaters wagons and will be attempting to see how many different varieties of rolling stock I can build from them. First, I will build one of each of the Dinorwic and Ffestiniog wagons, largely as supplied, and then I will try some different things out to see ...

Track for double-flange wheels?
Some of the rolling stock I am looking at (Slaters Dinorwic Wagons) have double flanged wheels. I guess that the track itself won't be any different but assume they won't work on 'normal' poimts/turnouts or similar. Does anyone have any pictures or advice on the use of double-flanged wheels? Is it a...

Re: Newcomer Roundhouse Billy Build
I like all of the 0-4-0 Roundhouse models but this is possibly my favourite body available for them. It is a 'Simply 7/8' Henry body. The one in the photo is a bit of a hybrid with a Katie/George boiler but with the Billy smokebox. I think this looks really good so I've ordered the body kit for a fu...

Re: Newcomer Roundhouse Billy Build
This is very interesting. Are you building a "George" AND a "Billy"? Or are you building your own version incorporating parts of each? I see you have a "George" body there, and in your picture of the assembled chassis, the weigh shaft is curved, like on a "George&...

How to add rust finish?
Can anyone give me some advice on adding a rust finish to a quarry wagon?
I think I have read that people use iron powder of some sort and vinegar/copper sulfate. What exact products do you use and how do you apply it?
Has anyone used the Modern Masters metal effects rust kit? If so, is it any good?

Re: Newcomer Roundhouse Billy Build
No posts for a while but progress is being made. The paint has gone on ok, but not as good as I would like. The satin finish isn't quite uniform but it will do. I tried to brush paint the wheel hubs with Testors enamel but it was awful, so I removed the paint, masked and painted them instead; they n...

Well the paint has finally arrived. The next problem is the temperature is forecast to be above 100f for the next 2 weeks, so there might be another delay

Re: Newcomer Roundhouse Billy Build
I'm still waiting on the paint and I might have to cancel my order with Mimuteman. I was told it was in line to be shipped a week ago but still nothing :x In the mean time I've been priming the brass parts but nothing worth updating here yet. It has given me the chance to do some other, less urgent,...

Re: Has radio control changed in the past 20 years?
The main brands (JR/Futaba/Hitec) and many others have the positive wire in the middle.
And those type of plugs can sometimes be inserted upside down which would put the signal (yellow) wire on the wrong pin.

Re: Has radio control changed in the past 20 years?
What servos are you using (brand and number)? Do you have pictures of the wiring (particularly the servo leads)? The first thing I would check, if there is absolutely no response, is that the servo is plugged in correctly; just because the plug fits doesn't necessarily mean the plug is the correct w...

Re: Which RC (and variable reverser question)?
Another option that can be employed is programmable servos. For example, it looks like the Roundhouse models use Hitec 81 type servos. There is a digital equivalent (5087MG?) where you can programme the direction and end points directly into the servo. One benefit of this, with simpler receivers lik...

Re: New project, coal fired live steam kit time
Look what I've found :D I genuinely can't believe it. I don't actually have the kit yet (it is at my parent's house), so I don't know if it uses the same boiler jacket, but did you paint the boiler itself? If so what did you use to paint it (and the smokebox)? Many thanks, thumbnail_20220520_142029....

Re: Newcomer Roundhouse Billy Build
I'm getting closer to starting to bolt things together (at last). The frames and cab floor are primed; I've been told that the Scalecoat paint is finally getting ready to be boxed and shipped so, hopefully, that will arrive soon. I have used the Brass Black on the lubricator. I'm not sure how durabl...
