Hi all.
Does anyone have, or know where I can get, dimensions of the above van. I would like at add one to my scratch built FR/NWNG stock. I can find plenty of photos but would like to built it to an accurate scale if i can.

Hi Rick.
This has been in my dad's possession since at least the mid 50s.

Life in the old dog yet.

Hi all. I was reading on another forum where a modeller had taken an old and wellworn hammer once owned by his father, cleaned it up and brought it back to life. That set me thinking about how many of us are still using anything in our modelling that, in other circumstances, could have been thrown a...

Re: Coronavirus projects

Hi all. Latest lockdown project is a small hunslet called 'Junior' but for a granite quarry in sunny Leicestershire not a Welsh slate quarry. It should be quite distinctive with no cab, just a roof supported on 4 steel pillars. So far i have the underframe and cylinders painted matt black with the m...

Re: Coronavirus projects

Hi all.
I haven't been able to try the system outside yet but for £39 in total it is worth giving it a go.
The loco kit only cost £81 including motor and gearbox so I have a radio controlled loco for £120 + a little work and paint (which I had anyway) :)

Re: Coronavirus projects

Hi all. As I don't have access to a running line at present here is my De-Winton running on blocks using the Locoremote radio control on a smartphone. I like the way that the phone display also shows % of full speed and battery voltage. It looks as though one of the cranks has slipped on its axle a ...

Re: Coronavirus projects

Hi Philip.
The 12v motor and reducing gearbox is supplied with the kit and is mounted horizontally between the frames. The power is from (at present) a pp3 battery in the boiler and the RC and switch is in the water tank. I will try and post a vid on YouTube over the weekend.

Re: Coronavirus projects

Hi all. Just finished a PDF Models De-Winton i have been working on over the summer. I clad the boiler with rosewood (i think) cut from an old xylophone key, glued the strips on to the boiler and then cut three thin brass bands to length and rolled them around a Soy sauce bottle. I then taped the ba...

Re: Quarry Hunslet.

Hi Andrew (et al) I have found just one photo of one of the original hunslets (Junior) delivered to the Groby quarry. It is very faded but i love the cab detail, what little there is of it. I will also try to recreate the lettering on the tank side, or as much as i can make out anyway. I wonder what...

Re: Quarry Hunslet.

Hi Andrew. In the booklet 'Groby and it's Railways' is the passage ". By 1893 a decision to use small 2' 0" gauge locomotives to take the granite from the working face to the crushing machines was taken. The first two small locomotives called 'Junior' and 'Sextus' were delivered in May and...

Quarry Hunslet.

Hi all. Having just completed a PDF models De Winton, I am making a start on one of their Port class quarry hunslets. I want to model it as Lady Madcap but before it was delivered to Dinorwic when it was named Sextus and working in the Groby granite quarry in Leicestershire, (Two miles away from my ...

Re: Recommended tools?

I agree with Phil. I have the same nut spinners. Invaluable in being able to turn a nut/bolt from the front if space at the side is limited. Obviously not as much leverage available as a spanner but more than enough for our model locos I feel.

Re: PDF Baldwin the Build so far

Hi all. Mitch, how are you getting on with your Baldwin build? Peter, sorry I have been a long time answering your request but here goes. - The useable space under the bonnet is- Length 85mm. Width 60mm. Height 40mm ( over the motor that invades the space a little). IMG_20200421_165012.jpg This shot...

Re: Coronavirus projects

Hi Tim et al. Got my plasticard gunpowder van body up to first primer stage. My first inclination is to now fill any gaps and sand smooth. But, would it be more prototypical to leave gaps as it wasn't a welded body as surely gaps would have been present between the riveted panels and strength bands....

Re: Coronavirus projects

Spent my Peterborough show money on a rivet press from Midland Railway Centre. Fantastic piece of kit. It produces excellent rivet detail and all equal size. There is a depth stop and an edge gauge (to get them all the same distance from the edge). All I have to do is get them all equidistant apart....

Re: Coronavirus projects

Hi all. Ffestiniog gunpowder van using Nigel Town's plans from the 16mm Ass'n website. Stuck the first part of the plan onto 5mm plasticard though I have cut the plan up to make it in a slightly different way. The plan suggests making the base and sides in one piece, whereas I am doing the top and s...
