Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
Thanks Trevor I will do that. I know there are many other factors, but printing the same article and comparing notes will definitely be a helpful learning experience for me - with a clear benchmark to work to! If I were to print it again I would delete all of the supports on the one end of the wagon...

Re: Stockpiling structures
I am very impressed by your buildings. They provide a real flavour of Australia. Just looking at them makes me realise just how hot it must be - particularly when you cant rely on air conditioning!
I look forward to seeing them set out alongside a railway.

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
I have to confess the finish is amazing. It makes me think that I should try bigger stuff in my Whale 2 and see what happens, but to be fair, I don't have the faith in it that I have on my AnyCubic printers, which mine are smaller ones. :dontknow: Oh dear. I should have bought an AnyCubic rather th...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
I guess it depends if you want a finished article or whether you want to make it and build it as a kit. One piece is easier to do the CAD work for but not so good if just one small part fails, whereas in seperate parts, you just just print the single part again wasting less resin but the CAD work i...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
That does indeed look excellent, Trevor. I've always resisted printing whole objects in favour of breaking them down into component parts and gluing them together. My main concern is that a complex object with a long print time gives more opportunity for something to go wrong. However, your example...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
Building this locomotive has helped me to understand better how to achieve good results with this large resin printer. As part of this I have been altering the support settings in the slicing software, to see what gets the best results for the sort of model I want to print. So far I have settled on ...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
Trevor, We did speak about this 12months ago  https://www.gardenrails.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=14146&p=171598&hilit=flexible#p171598 That was on my small Photon S, but when I got the big printer it was the first extra thing I bought and haven't regretted it for a second. Some...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
I have now got the body cleaned up and fully cured. I have also repaired the balance pipe under the front of the smokebox, and the handrail at the rear left hand side. I used resin for the repairs, cured it, and then added more resin. I added a small amount each time and built it up bit by bit. Ther...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
Yes, I got one of those when you mentioned it before, Steve, and it is useful but I find I tend to scratch the ali bed with it. I've just noticed on your two pics above that the surface of the print raft appears to have a dimpled top, not just from the support connections. Is there a particular rea...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
There have been a couple of updates to Anycubic's slicing software since I started building this locomotive - and I had another go at slicing the whole body as one piece - tanks, firebox and smokebox all in one part. This time it worked. So I have placed the component on the bed at as much of an ang...

Re: The Railway in the Valley of the Mill
It is a while since I added anything to this thread - I haven't abandoned the project but other things have got in the way. I have steadily been printing parts for it. IMG_3532.jpeg This is the first wall tower, with its remains of walls. Another is printed ready for assembly. Then another one is re...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
In fact I think getting it on my skin has inflamed latent dermatitis. Trevor Are you 100% sure this is the superglue and not the resin? I only ask as resin completely screwed up my hands for 10 months, cracking bleeding etc etc, really really nasty stuff. Apparently it goes through nitrile gloves a...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
the build volume of this resin printer is bigger than that of my filament printer. Same here. I have been, just for comparison, printing the parts from Rik's GVT wagon on both printers. On the filament printer I need to cut the wagon side and then reassemble, and it's a visible part. With resin, no...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
I have made a couple of attempts at printing the body. My initial attempts to slice the whole body as one part were unsuccessful as the slicing software couldn't handle the data density. So I tried just the tanks and peripheral bits: IMG_3508.jpeg I did set this at an angle with the front up in the ...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
I now have the footplate reprinted, cleaned up and connected to the chassis: IMG_3514.jpeg IMG_3515.jpeg I am using one of those geared motors, which seem to be very powerful for their size - and of course have a second standing by in case it isn't powerful enough. The top of the footplate has been ...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
Really useful thread. I must post about all the problems I am having with resin printing, and I would not have even attempted your chassis orientation for fear that supports would be insufficient to pull that much surface area off the FEP. So it's really good to know that's possible. I am curious w...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
I'm particularly impressed by the finish on the top of the footplate. If I'm seeing things correctly, the top of the footplate is the underside of the print and has the supports? There appears to be very minimal dimpling from the supports and relatively few visible layer lines - or is that simply b...

Re: Palmerston - Small England Loco as built
To give an idea of how I plan for the chassis, footplate and motion to fit together a screen shot: Screenshot 2023-11-27 at 19.12.26.png The chassis fits into a slot in the footplate and is secured at each end with bolts and brass bushes bonded into the footplate. The cylinders and slide bars are se...
