Re: Building an 0-4-0 outside frame tank loco

Greg, Looks interesting. Quick question what is the part number for the Pololu? This is where I bought it. Note limited supply! https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/176169469400?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110018%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.COMPLISTINGS%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20210617141043%26meid%3D75aef532d0fe470...

Building an 0-4-0 outside frame tank loco

I wanted another small steam loco for my indoor Claymine Branch. And I thought an outside frame type might be different. So I purchased a Bachmann motor block from a 45t centre cab diesel. bachmann centrecab motor block (1).JPG One unforeseen problem is that the wheels are quite large – 41mm dia. No...

Re: Solder

You can walk into your nearest Jaycar and buy tin/lead electronics solder under their Duratech label, although they also waste shelf space on the other crap. It comes in various size packs, but the catalog no. for the 200g pack of 1.0mm size is NS3010. As it happens, it's cheaper than the lead free...

Solder

I had to buy another spool of resin-core solder - the first in many years. I tried it and it will hardly melt with my 20W iron. The bloody EU has banned the use of lead and it is 99.3% tin and 0.3% copper. How is that supposed to melt? What a waste of money. The old stuff was 60% tin and 40% lead. U...

Thanks Peter, and everyone else who replied.

There can be no doubt that you NEED two Garratts. Get to it! (ignore the question of room)

Re: Sandstone & Termite

Since I had the track all cleaned up from the day before, I decided to get both of my Garratts out for a double-head spectacular. The blue Garratt is seldom run - the last run was in January last year. And the LiPo battery was still fully charged. When run together it's obvious that big blue only ch...

Re: Sandstone & Termite

It's been a long time since the weather has been kind. But finally the four of us local GR fans were able to get together and run trains at my place.
It's much more fun with 4 trains vying for track rights!

It is a rainy Christmas Eve, so I ran a few trains on the pottery shed line.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?

Yes, yes, YES. I love it. Another Garratt version is always good for the soul.

(I am just a little bit glad to hear even you are having weight distribution problems. If the Master has trouble, I don't feel so bad.)

I have now completed the brake van to hold the train on the steep grades.

Re: Making "steam" from an atomizer for making mist

I have ordered a couple of these atomisers. Will give me something to do indoors during hot summer days, experimenting.
IF you don't hear from me again, I have atomised myself. :salute:

Re: Sweet Miscellany

Geez Aaaron, your post came in 4 hours too late for me. I'm building a tiny brake van and had just finished scribing the 'timber' sides. It would have been much better made from corrugated iron.
Your model looks fantastic.

Re: A tiny G gauge indoor layout

I'll bet the drivers of steam locos will curse you for having to start on a grade and a curve ...... :? Rik The Working Appendix will be altered to require that the Shed Supt (me) only roster a Diesel loco when required to stop at "Lookout". Any steam locos timetabled to sto...

Re: A tiny G gauge indoor layout

Well it is a tiny layout, so this is a tiny project. Following representations from passengers, a small platform has been built adjacent to the lake so that passengers may detrain to view the gorge and waterfalls. The platform is a whole 3” long (=6’), made from ‘sleepers’ and the safety fence is fl...

Re: The Claymine Branch - tiny indoor G gauge

That's a good suggestion. But.... 1. I need about 100g weight on the 'spring' to apply enough brake force (five 50c pieces). It's the reason I went for the cam idea. 2. the ball doesn't roll off the brakes going uphill unless the wagon is turned around! I don't have any ball bearings and the only cy...

Re: The Claymine Branch - tiny indoor G gauge

Having been given the Round tuit by Graeme, I had no excuse but to get experimenting. The problem to be solved is that on my tiny indoor layout there are grades as steep as 1:12 or so. I have to keep my wagons as light and free-running as possible to get up the hill, but when descending, they tend t...
