Re: HGLW Wittenberg-Schafer Loco
Nice little loco and a great finish. I didn't seal the MDF on my recent HGLW build before painting. I found the flat surfaces took primer and paint well, but visible end 'grain' sections absorbed the paint and needed several applications before they were sealed. If I made another model from MDF, I t...

Re: Hobby leads to job
Sounds brilliant, Michael. Also great to hear about an education system which actually serves the needs of its 'consumers'. I have always had a great deal of regard for Scandinavian culture and their social and political priorities. It's no wonder that Scandinavians consistently come top in global s...
Re: Boots
Fascinating. I gave up wearing shoes (and hence boots) about 25 years ago. My feet have never been happy being wrapped up in leather. Since then I have worn open toed sandals (yes and socks) at all times of the year. In the summer I discard the socks and go commando (on the feet that is!). It's not ...

Re: HGLW - Loco build and rc installation
Great work Rik! looking forward to seeing more. Mitch. Your wish is my command, Mitch. She's now emerged from the paint-shop and had a few more details added - couplings (yes, I know LGB couplings look $#!t , but they make shunting a lot easier - and they are comparatively cheap), buffers (courtesy...

Re: HGLW - Loco build and rc installation
Thanks. I was scanning the internet for suitable prototypes and decided Peldon at Amberley could be my inspiration. By coincidence, I've just seen Tom's thread mentioning Peldon is the inspiration for his Cricket refurb. I think I can get away with it - Peldon was built in 1936 and my railway is set...

Re: Building a radio controlled (electric) traction engine
I admire your tenacity, Greg. I must admit that I'd have assumed there was a dodgy connection if it was happening in the field but not on the bench, but the oscilloscope trace suggests something else is going on. Presumably, as the difference between this program and your usual one is the addition o...

Re: 16mm and its relationship with other scales
I've said it before in another thread, but the attraction for me of 16mm scale in the garden is watching a train threading its way through a real landscape. There's something really evocative about seeing railway lines threading through natural vegetation. I've no idea why, but this notion has alway...

Wow! Must have been a spine tingling moment. I doubt I will ever see any of my old cars in a TV program, apart from scrapheap challenge....

Re: HGLW - Loco build and rc installation
Looks good Rik, and thanks for the blog post. It looks as though it might be a wee bit light to get much haulage, though? Also, I realise that you've just built it 'as delivered', but I wonder low long that drive belt will last without stretching and slipping? I think I'd have preferred a delrin ch...

Not entirely relevant but somehow this discussion reminded me of this wonderful rewrite

Neat looking job, Daan. I like the look of that bearing. Wish I had bits and bobs like that in my bits boxes.

HGLW - Loco build and rc installation
As promised in this thread - https://gardenrails.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=11783#p135568 - I have constructed a simple loco and installed Deltang r/c equipment, hopefully to show how easy it can be. At the moment, I have only made a short video but I aim to have the blog entry finished by t...

Re: Chain shunting
Wonderful stuff, loved both videos. Is the 'real life' one shot at Bristol docks? Yes, Bristol. From 0:43 they are hauling the wagons back using the same powered capstan, suggesting the rope must pass around another unpowered capstan at the far end. My thinking is that a similar arrangement might h...

I'm wondering if there was another capstan at the head of the siding. Not quite the same but this video suggests two capstans are involved:

Re: India
One thing I didn't notice a lot of in Riks photo's was the trains festooned in people that one so often associates with Indian railways. I guess it may be more of a suburban feature where the traffic density is high. Did you see much of it around the major cities Rik? Andrew Hi Andrew Didn't see it...

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
A shame that you have had to make this mod, Peter. From my recollection, the curves on your railway are not particularly tight. It does sound as if there's a fundamental design flaw with the kit.
