A train as long as our bridge

I was doing some more steam trials today and added three extra vehicles to the end of our usual train.  I found that the train was as long as the removable bridge, which is about 2.6 metres.  The track is just about level here.   These LGB trucks have been converted to chain couplings.  I've found t...

A live steam trip around our line

A trip around our line on a very early and cold morning. Lots of lovely steam though, it was just about dead calm with steam wafting over our fence. And, plenty of whistling too.

Please could you explain the function of an exhaust bypass? It's a modification I initially made to drain excess condensate out of the motor when running, but it had other unexpected uses. When the loco is stationary if I open the forward running drain cock, put the reverser into reverse, and then ...

I got up early on Sunday and braved the very cold temperature outdoors to do some videoing.  It was worth it, the steam effects were the best yet.   Here is a video that shows the loco being prepared for a run around our line, and the actual run with the camera on the regulator watching it go about ...

Brilliant idea on the Cruise Control! Can you adjust the controlled speed desired? Thank you Jim. I could adjust the speed, but a scale 10 mph suits this loco well, and it sits right in the middle of the usual narrow gauge operating speeds. I did a lot of testing this weekend, burnt a lot of alcoho...

Interesting (and highly ingenious) - is the control circuitry something you have designed yourself? It's a hotch-potch of parts really, all sprinkled with a big dose of good fortune. Here's a picture of the loco and 3-plank control wagon in finished guise: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/bou...

Interesting stuff - would love to know more about the contents of the van and how it manages the speed. All the control gubbins is in a truck with the batteries and receiver. The wheel speed is measured and the servo is moved accordingly and the radio overides the control to stop the loco. I haven'...

Cruise control for DeWinton

My trusty meths fired Dave Watkins "Idris" based DeWinton has just been out-shopped with R/C servos on the regulator and whistle. The whistle servo is glued on top of the regulator servo, which in-turn is glued on to a timber mounting. The timber insulates the servos well from the heat of ...

Live steam DeWinton with 433 MHZ R/C and cruise control

My venerable live steam DeWinton (based on Dave Watkins' Idris) has recently been rebuilt and has R/C stop and start, and R/C controlling the whistle. Cruise control attempts to keep the loco at a scale 10 mph speed. Two servos have been placed under a slightly larger bunker and control the regulato...

Thank you. I built it.

It's based on Dave's "Idris" plans.

Thanks for the kind words. It's very satisfying finally finishing it. Years ago I'd have given up at the first hurdle, but nowadays I seem to be able to stick at it. Here's the latest pictures showing the loco in NZR gloss black. I'll just keep it simple on the outside, no blobs and gadgets, or wind...

Diesel Outline...

Dear All, Here is my tribute to LBSC. Two and a half years in the making. I bought a bundle of old magazines from the 1930's and a construction article caught my eye. The article starts with: "The success of the Diesel locomotive on intermittent shunting work and short branch-line operation has...

I scaled one up for 45 mm track. It is a sucessful loco, and with its greater mass and volume it can run very slowly, slower than my 16 mm scale version.

Here it is in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FdQw78BLRc

It is a 1930's design by LBSC for an O gauge steam powered diesel outline loco. Perhaps diesels were starting to appear on the scene then. I scaled-up the design for 45 mm gauge, and increased the width a bit to match my LGB stock. I've seen a picture of one other model made to the plans. The loco h...

DeWinton hauling a train up the 1:80 bank

This one's my favourite video, it features our first DeWinton loco. 16 mm Albus chuffing up the bank with the longest train ever - with all our rolling stock. The loco is out of shot for a long time but the audio is great, turn-up the volume, sit back and listen to the music. http://www.youtube.com/...
