Something a bit unusual - a steam railmotor

Hi everybody, It's a long time since I posted anything on here though I do come here and look around quite often. Despite an abundance of time over the last year I must admit I've found it hard sometimes to raise the motivation for modelling though, to be fair, I did achieve quite a bit outside work...

Re: Making a point frog.

Ha ha, thanks Andrew !

That one is entirely Tenmille parts, sleepers, chairs and brass bullhead rail. Hard to believe it's brass when it's weathered for a while !

Re: Making a point frog.

Yes, a lot prettier joint. I am not sure about strength though, the first one made I tried to break, both rails just became 'U' shaped the silver solder wouldn't part and I suspect wouldn't under any normal effort. Yes Tony, I accept it was a bit of a spurious point about strength ! Nothing in our ...

Re: Making a point frog.

Interesting but it strikes me it doesn't make for the most satisfactory soldered joint as you have a gap at the back where the rail web is - unless you fill the whole thing with solder. I have always done mine a slightly different way using a method I read about somewhere back in the forgotten mists...

You've done a great job there Rik, a fantastic looking model. I'd be very proud of that.

Re: Coronavirus projects

Thanks very much. Rik, the line doesn't have a particular setting or story to tell, I'm afraid. I know it's important to many people but doesn't bother me. I just wanted to create a line round the edge of the garden where I could run anything I wanted, wasn't too obtrusive, had a few interesting fea...

Re: Coronavirus projects

I don't know about you, but I have found that nearly a month's incarceration has resulted in some unexpected and quite uncharacteristic productivity. I suppose it could have gone either way. Sit on the sofa, watch daytime TV and turn into a gibbering idiot or get on and do something productive and h...

Re: MARCH 2020 Quarterly Photo Gallery Entries

I like the vintage Lady Anne too... Sweet isn't she. My first loco, bought new in 1983. It spent many years getting dusty on the shelf in the shed when I lost interest a bit. Recently had a strip down and a new coat of paint. Come the spring I must have a look for that big bottle of meths. If I hav...

Re: GRR - Light Railway Extension

"about level" was the best I achieved !
I managed to get some sections dead level, in other places I'm sure the ground moved when I wasn't looking.
Eventually decided a spirit level makes it look worse than it is !

Re: MARCH 2020 Quarterly Photo Gallery Entries

Here in south east England snow has been a bit thin on the ground (sorry !) in recent years. We might not get any at all, which suits me fine, so, for the sake of entering something, I've done the best I can with the reality of winter on my line. It might look like summer but the temperature was onl...

Re: Internet "forums" are a thing of the past

I have followed this thread from the start and have finally been shamed into contributing something as I guess I am one of those members who doesn't contribute much, at least recently, although I did manage an entry in the quarterly photo gallery a few months back. I can't really comment on the heal...

Re: Quarterly Garden Railway Gallery - June 2019 FINAL REMINDER

Thanks for the kind words Rod, but you'd have to be very patient ! It's taken me probably three years on and off to achieve that, most of the time spent planning, i.e. standing there looking at a pile of dirt and rocks and scratching my head. It was dismantled and started again several times before ...

Re: Quarterly Garden Railway Gallery - June 2019 FINAL REMINDER

Hi all, it's a while since I've posted on here mainly due to a lack of anything to post. I seem to go for long periods without making any progress at all but I have finally finished (well, almost) one small scenic corner of the line so I thought I'd jump in with a last minute entry. Garratt crossing...

Re: Disasters, Out-takes, Accidents, Fails etc.

I remember making a part for a locomotive- a small box consisting of three small pieces of brass sheet. Took me ages to solder them together to my satisfaction. Scrubbed it clean, then thought it would be a good idea to dry it by holding it in a pair of pliers in front of my garage heater. Those pro...

They Shall Not Grow Old

Last night we visited the local Odeon to see the world premier of this film, live from the British Film Institute in London and being simultaneously shown on cinemas all over the country. I only knew about it after seeing an item on the TV news. Despite the high ticket price it is the first time in ...

Re: Meanderings in Dorset and Devon

Thanks Rik, a very entertaining read and excellent pictures. As Greg says we really are very lucky with the number of these little lines around the country. A couple of those I'd not heard of before reading your blog. I must make the effort to visit one or two.

Despite using up vital energy supplies which are seriously depleted due to the extreme temperatures, my face managed to contort itself involuntarily into a broad grin for the entirety of that report. Brilliant, as always. Thanks.

Re: Endeavour last night - Zips up Anorak

What amused me most about the gliding Spitfire was the end of the sequence when the camera pans back to the burnt out wreckage revealing the propeller mounted on the end of a scaffold pole. No sign of anything resembling an engine - not surprised he had to glide so much !
