On a second look under the dome what I though was a sold post is a brass cap screwed over the safety valve with this and the lock nut having a small hole though to let the steam out.

Have you tried it as in the photo it just looks like the new valve has a longer thread so may well still fit.

There are several different types of Ronson valves, Roundhouse and Accucraft use different fittings.

The dome is the same as a Merlin Major which is the terminus of the R/C aerial, however I have unscrewed the luck nut on top and the brass post inside is more chunky that I would expect, I wondered if it was a unique design of valve that was piped out to the smoke box.

Re: Older Pearse locos

This may be a silly question but where are the safety valve on older Pearse locos are they a cunning hidden design? Are you interested in a particular loco. If it´s a W&L one, then I can have a look when I get back some time this week. I have an old Genesis which I've not steamed yet which only...

I know its a bit of a stupid question but what actually is the valve gear? is it the rods connected to the piston ? Valve gear or the rods that connect the wheels to the cylinder valves on top or behind the cylinders. There are various types some are connected to the outside cranks others are on ec...

Yeah may be a good idea to cannibalize that one to keep the others going especially if the cylinders are ok as that tends to be the part that can wear out the most i think Even then it is usually the PTFE pistons nthat have worn out and they can be replaced with brass ones with O rings. The valve g...

Oh well at least one works , how much do you reckon it will cost for Boiler and gas tank? It really depend on where they come from, since these use standard Beck parts there are always parts or scrapped locos coming available but it would not be that hard to make new copper ones. I'm undecided whet...

Joe:108427 wrote:I didnt realise merlin made saddle tank versions, its hard to choose which type looks best. Do both of yours work?
Only one works although the chassis is good other than a missing screw on the other but needs a new boiler and gas tank.

Joe:108415 wrote:Wow that looks great what materials did you use and was it just the saddle tank you added? I think I will have to do this modification to my Merlin Midas as it looks great
It is standard early Monarch body which just sits on a Beck boiler and chassis.

Hello Joe, To put it bluntly...my Merlin was "scrapped"! I did not want some other innocent stuck with junk.... A club hammer is a great tool! If had just kept it a few years Pearse would have been able to get it running perfectly as there early locos were mechanically very similar but bu...

The knobs are just a screw fit infact the one on my Zillertal is loose and I need to put some thread lock on. The regulator knob as a pin through it which needs removing first.

Some people seem to like to bash Merlins but as well as looking much better than 1980's Roundhouse locos, depsite some Roundhouse service parts still being available I see more Merlins running of the same age.

Joe:108086 wrote:how compatible are roundhouse parts with merlins?
Roundhouse made the last Beck Annas which have the same chassis as this and fitted their own cylinders so if you have the tools and ability it is not very complicated.

The seller is a dealer in steam models who buys his stuff at auction and then resells on ebay and at toy fairs. The loco is a fairly standard early Midus which is basically a Beck Anna with a new body to make it look a bit British. If looked after they can be fine little basic locos but a notion of ...

I think most people would of bought Ragleth with a cab rather than tying to make one for Edrig, surely the charm of Edrig is the open cab which also makes it easy to drive as a first manual loco. There are also the body kits available.

Fat chance now that Accucraft have hiked up their prices there is no competition forcing Roundhouse to keep prices down.
