Solder or screw?

I'm conducting a bit of market research here. Together with a friend who is a talented programmer and circuit designer I'm working on a range of speed controls, both for R/C and manual locos. Current offerings on the market are both bulky and expensive. What is the preference in terms of connectors?...

I'm working on affordable speed controllers for loco use together with a friend who is brilliant at programming microcontrollers and designing circuits. Doesn't help you now of course. ESC's for brushed motors are a dying breed because everyone in the car and plane world use brushless motors these d...

Making files for use on a laser is a bit different. I have received excellent drawings from talented draughtsmen that still required a lot of work.

I doubt it. I have offered a cutting service in the past but it is a waste of time. Most people are not capable of making a CAD drawing to the correct spec so I end up spending a lot of time correcting them.

It's just a 60W laser that will cut wood and plastics. Metal cutting lasers are big and very, very expensive.

7/8ths tinplate skip

Just completed this one. It's made from tinplate from the design available from http://tinplategirl.com/ Ignore that fact that the skip is not centered on the frame - I got a bit eager when nearing completion and got my measurements screwed up. Since I'm currently jobless I plan to make a few to sel...

Really? I'd love to have one again. Not going to happen unless I find a job soon though.

Great video! My Mamod would run at that speed as well after I made new cylinders for it (old ones were so worn it would hardly run at all).

The circuitry on a 40MHz RX/TX set will not work on a 27MHz set by just swapping crystals. There will be most likely be other parts in the RF circuit that needs to be replaced. The range of these small cars is very limited. Much better to pick up a cheap 2.4GHz set on Ebay. A car TX and RX can be ha...

Great links, thanks a lot. There is no way getting around China. I have received parts quotes from UK CNC turners and the parts are actually more expensive than if I make them myself! However I have some experience sourcing parts from China. Parts like the gears are 1/4 of the UK price. Probably mad...

As always I'm late to the ball. I would love to take over the manufacturing of locos. I did contact John Prescott about a year before he passed away but he never responded. It seems that there isn't a big interest in selling on a product line after manufacturers stop production. Shame really as ther...

Heaven forbid the association should move into this century with the rest of us and have a forum! I have suggested it a number of time on the Yahoo egroup and been called all sorts of nasty things for suggesting it.

That's the dark side of the Internet - people have come to expect instant gratification. I'm no better myself when dealing with businesses. However I don't have the same expectations when dealing with non-profit organisations run by volunteers (unpaid staff). Compared to many other associations, clu...

MDF is great with lasers. Because it is very uniform it is easy to get the settings right. The density throughout a sheet of ply can vary a lot.
