Re: Building the Compton Valence Light Railway gets underway
Just wondering if this should be moved to the Railways and Layouts section so I can make it ongoing? Sorry for the inconvenience. No inconvinience at all, your wish is a mods command! There are a number of railway construction projects on this part of the forum so moving it here does make a fair bi...

Re: New Archangel Loco Works website
Looks like Stewart is turning out some lovely models these days. I was lucky enough a year or three back to have a go with a virtually fresh out of the box two cylinder gas fired Sgt Murphey. The gas firing system wasn't great until the tank got warm, but once that settled it was a fantastic little ...

Re: Railway TV programmes
https://www.youtube.com/embed/76ZHSafRZkQ And I've now found this episode which even has Garden Railway content, with shots of the G scale layout at Gorse Blossom Railway in Devon and footage of a Roundhouse Dylan going round the track at Butterley. I also suspect this might be the last episode they...

Re: Railway TV programmes
There was in the 1990's an absolutely brilliant Railway series on the BBC, made by enthusiasts for enthusiasts called "Making Tracks". It was presented by Bob Symes (of course) and Mary-Jean Hasler. I vaguely remember being enthralled by it when I was little, and fortunately my grandma had...

Re: Descaling boilers
I used the gauge glass on my uncles' Taliesin as a guide, once it is starting to gain deposits then it is time to washout the fleet in turn. I tend to use watered down white wine vinegar, although I have used it neat if I think the scaling is bad. I also gently agitate the loco to slosh around what ...

Re: Wood primer
I tend to build and then prime and paint, first a couple of coats of sanding sealer, sanded back each time, then at least one coat of spray primer or wood primer, again sanded back (with then another coat of primer in necessary). Finally I paint the top coat, with as many coats as needed to get a go...

Re: End of Season Pictures
Summer on the Afonglas and Nant Llwyd Railway was all about the arrival of new motive power, Beddgelert landing at the start of June. It then ran for pretty much all running sessions for the rest of the season.

Re: Bowaters FR carriages
I'm in Porthmadog at the moment. Can you casually visit B lodge? Would be nice to take the old man to have a look... Not really I'm afraid, I've done a bit of volunteering at Boston Lodge and that has been what has got me in in the past. When I got the dimensions of number 12 it was an opportunist ...

Re: Bowaters FR carriages
Boston Lodge carriage works seem to be a bit notorious for not working to drawings in particular, and turning one coach out a bit different to the previous one. That said, one of the guys in the carriage works was very accommodating when I measured 12/van 5 by hand a few years ago. I've just made a ...
Re: Penrhyn??
I have but like most people who know some or all of the story I don't feel at liberty to say on the Internet. The track will probably be staying where it is and in theory the railway could come back to life, but it certainly wouldn't be under the operation of those who have been running it thus far.

Re: Ultimate ride on 7/8ths loco
That isn't a tea tray, it is simply a recess filling the space between the top of the tank and the boiler. Might get used for carrying tea and biscuits on jollys up the line though...

Re: Ultimate ride on 7/8ths loco
Not 7/8th's, 1/12th if you are being accurate for scale and gauge! If you would like to see Katie in the metal (and it is well worth seeing as it is rather nice) then visit the museum at the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. Hopefully, the paperwork for steaming Katie in public will be sorted out soon...

Well, here we go, a picture of one of the re-ballasted sections of the Afonglas and Nant Llwyd Railway. IMG_1185 - Copy.JPG And the reason for the work? Well, its in the photo too. A beautiful black Roundhouse Beddgelert has joined my fleet, after being ordered at the end of February. It arrived at ...

Re: Using SBR for fixing ballast
Well I've been (very) slowly working away on re-ballasting the Afonglas and Nant Llwyd Railway and true to form I've found my own method for ballasting. I lay down the grano dust ballast completely dry, but then spray it with a water and PVA mixture (plus a drop of washing up liquid). After this, I ...

Most interesting, must get round to visiting at some point. Your track plan is very similar to mine, the first one I've seen that is so similar.

Re: Criccieth Castle vs Accucraft Baugley
I actually have both, and must admit my preference is to go for Criccieth Castle over the Baguley as it is somewhat more robust, and also has full lights and sound. The earlier plastic chassis Baguleys are a bit fragile, no idea what the metal chassis ones are like though.

Re: A Light Railway for the Western Dales
Excellent backstory Phil, although if my knowledge of local NG lines is correct at Carnforth there is also connections to the Little Morecambe Steam Railway and the southern (respectable) section of the Silverdale Light Railway. The less said about the highly disrespectable northern section of the S...

Re: Using SBR for fixing ballast
Well today I've ballasted a little trial area in the steaming bay at Afallen, using recycled old ballast recovered from previous track work and crushed back to size. I applied the SBR using Peter's method, and after doing this in the morning, when I went out to check it around an hour and a half ago...
