That is a good mask for working with cement, spray paint aerosol and any other work that has dust particles.
Yes, I use a mask like that, with replaceable filters for all painting, sanding or anything else involving fine airborne particles.

That plant growth must have taken some clearance!

Re: HGLW Wittenberg-Schafer Loco

Ian, watered down PVA will add to your problems, it is the water content which causes the MDF to swell and go 'fluffy'. Sanding sealers or shellac are far better because they are quick drying and stay on the surface without soaking the material. Once dry they can be sanded between coats and a good ...

Re: HGLW Wittenberg-Schafer Loco

Chris, Following yours and Rik's posts on the HGLW loco's I sahll probably be buying one shortly. Just have to decide which one. Can you give me some advice on painting the MDF please? I've heard it is better to seal it first before any sanding, otherwise it just creates a "fluffy" finish ...

Re: My Proposed Railway

The element with which I'm currently struggling is a name. I'm currently thinking along the lines of - 'Something clever' Preservation Light Railway, as I then have carte blanche to run pretty much anything I fancy. I've almost finalised my names. I used inspiration from Rik and used places names a...

Re: My Proposed Railway

I have taken advantage of the warm weather and spent a little time in the garden thinking about the proposed railway. I am probably only going to have one loop, not the two I was thinking of. The loop will be between two terminal stations to allow end to end running and, if required, some continuous...

Re: More HGLW Wittenberg-Schafer!

Michael - I don't think noisy motor/gears is a big issue with the HGLW locos. I fiddled with the gear meshing on my recent HGLW loco until it I thought I'd got it perfect. It travels forward as sweetly and quietly as we'd all like - but sounds like a badly silenced moped in reverse. Now why might t...

Re: Batteries + Binnie Parts

Rod, I have some axleboxes somewhere that, from memory, look similar to the Binnie ones. I haven't seen them for a while, but I'll have a search for them and see if they're suitable. I have a some Binnie skips I can use for comparison. I think the ones I have are made from acrylic or reinforced nylo...

Re: My Proposed Railway

Thank you Daan. I always intended to build as you suggest, whatever the final plan. I have seen many a 4mm large railway get abandoned because the project is too big. There are a few other reasons why I will not be attempting to build everything at once. The garden is not large and my wife also uses...

Re: My Proposed Railway

Good news! Another garden railway under construction. Thank you Invicta280. A long way off "under construction" yet. Planning is underway, but it has been for 10 years. So far only outline planning approval has been given by the authorities. Detailed plans have to be drawn up and approved...

Re: My Proposed Railway

Hi Ian, You've clearly invested some time to thinking the project through. Always a wise move! I look forward to hearing more. I've been building for about three years and I wouldn't claim to be even half way yet. Other things get in the way as you say. Keep us posted as you go, it will inspire slo...

Off the top of my head, exhaust pipe and silencer, horn, windscreen wiper, doors/louvres on the bonnet sides. Lights, or lamp irons, pipe work, grab handles. Vacuum pipes if it will haul passenger stock.

If I think of any more I'll add them.

Thank you Tom.

While my railway is at the "planning" stage I'm happy to leave it as a project so I can share my thoughts and ideas. When I start the construction I'll probably start a new thread and cross reference them both.

Re: Couplings

Rik, With a little modification the hook can be made to pivot downwards to facilitate uncoupling. It would also enable auto uncoupling if you want to add that later. It would just need a magnetic dropper. I used to use florists iron wire. Available for a few pence and already blackened too! As wire ...

My Proposed Railway

I thought I'd share with you my thoughts and plans for my railway. This will not be a quick build. I am starting a new business venture and also do some commissioned 4mm work, building locomotive kits and painting or repainting stock. It has taken me over 10 years to get this far! Time is at a premi...

Very interesting. Electronics are a complete mystery to me and I have no need of this facility, but I do find these articles fascinating. You guys with so much knowledge of these things have my admiration.

I'm sure others will learn a lot from your posts.

Re: Stripping paint off and MDF carriage

Although I've never stripped or worked with MDF, to be honest I'd be inclined to sand the existing finish down, rather than apply any solvent or liquid to MDF unless there's a very good reason you need to strip it. A sanded finish will give a key for the new coats of paint. If you do sand it, a word...

I agree. I am at the planning stage and the overall shots are most useful.
