Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
So the horse the right way round - straight out of the printer: IMG_1100.jpg and with the support filament knocked off: IMG_1101.jpg I will try printing something in two parts soon. Probably most appropriate for a figure. This horse has printed very cleanly in one piece. Any roughness is underneaths...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
Firstly creating 3 D images from a photo. That looks incredible! The problem will be in getting to use it and actually making printed models from it. However the potential is beyond my wildest imaginings - just think of people in historic photos and making models of them! I have had a quick look and...

Re: 16mm scale "Linda"
I have remade the cab. Bit more effort than I intended to put into it but it is done.
I had to make a new spectacle plate, unsolder everything and then solder the new part in:
Ready to try to run it again now!

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
So the result of the overnight print (7.5 hours by the way): IMG_1096.jpg I printed it upside down because this is how I have achieved success with horses in the past. You can see if you look carefully a light line on the horses neck and another parallel on his "chest". It is where the pri...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
I have now drawn up the horses "tack", or at least an approximation to it. This is what I am currently printing: Screen Shot 2020-11-26 at 21.10.53.png and in case you are wondering how I created it: Screen Shot 2020-11-26 at 21.11.12.png The elements are basic circles pulled to give thick...

Re: Southwold coach
If you want to play around with it give me some dimensions for the southward model and I can print off appropriate parts, try it out and send you a set which seems to work best

Re: Southwold coach
I think it would be sufficiently flexible. The springs on the wagonette actually work as springs - that is what makes me think it would. If a particular spring is too stiff it can be altered. Different parabola. Different width different thickness. Of course it is an experiment. Nothing ventured not...

Re: Southwold coach
Rick I couldn't resist the challenge of drawing up a complete compensated cleminson chassis. The idea being that the springs actually allow the axle boxes to move up and down in the W irons. It incorporates Philips arrangement and my arrangement to limit sideways movement of the centre axle. It look...

Re: Southwold coach
I like Philips solution. It is am elegant engineering solution to the problem. As I understand the Cleminson principle it requires springs to hold the axle trucks central under straight track conditions. This solution provides that. I also made 6 wheel coaches in my 4mm scale days and here are the u...

Re: Southwold coach
Rik That looks fantastic! It looks very even and symmetrical, square and straight - particularly considering the number of openings in it. So how did you achieve that - and which bits were 3 D printed? The Cleminson undercarriage looks good as well. I have made them before in 4mm scale using thin br...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
Firstly let me show you the finished wagonette: IMG_1092.jpg The rear door is meant to be sloping down at an angle - the rear face isn't upright - it slopes at the same angle. IMG_1093.jpg The detailing was not easy to print because much of it is so delicate. This is what worked best: The drivers ba...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
Peter In some ways you are correct in that printing the building in sections isn't perfect. But the cost and ease is not as you think. For example once the thing is designed - and it doesn't always take that long to draw it - it just prints away while I do something else. Sitting at the computer in ...

Re: A different 3D printed diesel
Philip Have viewed the video and I have got so far. I have imported a figure into blender with its skeleton, and made it sit down I have exported it, repaired the mesh and sliced it. I then went on to add something for the person to sit on so I could adjust the position to fit the seat. What I end u...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
Oh and its likely to lead to another wagon with a roof on the back section- which is mentioned as an option in the sources where I found the information to make it. And of course the Festiniog had a carriage wagon - and I think I could make a different type of wagon to go on that!

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
I also think it is clever to use the cab to position the figure. I was wondering if that might work. I would also want seated figures for coaches, and sitting them in the coach itself seems like a way forward. Beats messing about with modelling clay and baking foil! In fact I am wondering if I shoul...

Re: 16mm scale "Linda"
I nhave finished making the springs and fitted them, I have also made a new reach rod which is stiffer, to replace the bit of bent wire.
Just the spectacle plate to play with now, and then I will try to get video of it running properly.

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
So I have been more successful with printing the wagon. Firstly the sides of the body printed flat on the bed: IMG_1082.jpg That was printed with a raft - which is a bed of filament laid onto the bed before the model is started. It helps with adhesion as well as making it easier to remove from the b...

Re: A different 3D printed diesel
Makehuman at a first play seems fairly straightforward, but I'm getting the impression that as soon as you need something not immediately available the learning curve will steepen dramatically. Blender ? yup, tried several times to get into it, but, yes, it's a nightmare. I admit that I've never tr...

Re: A different 3D printed diesel
Well you have all contributed to setting me off on a new quest! It looks like we can make printed people to populate our railways, and I can see a way I might be able to do this. So I have downloaded "makehuman" and "blender". Here is my first attempt at printing a basic figure f...
