My understanding is that with modern oils (synthetic types) it is not so much the oil base that breaks down but the additives. This may not be a problem with veg oils or mineral oils. However some oils are hydroscopic, that is they absorb moisture from the air and obviously an emulsion of oil and wa...

I second that, Shed hinges etc, etc. I would not oil anthing that could be classed as a mechanisim (locks etc) as veg oil has a habit of going solid at low temps.

Radio Control?

I want to refit the radio control in my Merlin. It has two servos still in place but nothing else. I have been looking at various systems from various sources such as chuffed2bits. I don't know which road to go down. A Spektrum DX5e or the Ripmax Saturn. I don't mind spending the money for the Spekt...

Thanks for the nice comments every one.
I had been toying with the idea of filling in the space under the track with something but I might leave it as a viaduct/trestle type thing.
It depends how it looks with the final track base fitted.

I am a bit weary of using kettle descaler as it can be a bit harsh and some can attack some metals. (I used to live in a very, very hard water area, so have used most types of wonder descaler that have come and gone!!!)
I am probably being paranoid but I think I will go down the vinegar route first.

It is the thick 460 grade oil I am using. Thick is not the word, its a bit nippy here at the moment and I thought I was going to have to hack lumps off it and stuff it in the lubricator, never mind pouring it.

I will raid the pantry and try and find some white vinegar and give it a go.

I am assuming it is a type of displacement but I could be wrong.
It is in the front dome where the regulator valve is. You seem to be pouring the oil onto the valve, its not that visible unfortunately.

Steamed it up today and it ran very well. It does need the radio gear fitting as hand control is a bit of a struggle. The two servos are in place but nothing else. So I will aquire a new control and receiver. This should make a huge difference. The lubricator seems to empty very quickly, I don't kno...

More Track laid today. I am now up to the amazing length of 6 yards! Still its down and while it is part of the layout that will be rebuilt as a station it does give me an idea of how the line needs to progress. I also had a steam up of my new engine. All in the rain and wind, I must be bloody mad. ...

If I may interpose. IMHO foam insulation board is okay but can become a bit powdery at the edges after a while out in the open (the bits with the foil on it seem ok). I have also seen birds peck at it and other animals seem to like attacking it (This may be just the local loony Welsh wildlife). Stil...
