How about Ellie the Steam Tram?yellow_cad wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 10:52 pm Finally after much searching, I did find plans for the Cracker that have been scaled up to use 45 mm track. I am still open to any other ideas for first build that might be out there.

Re: The Development of the WLR
Didn't achieve a lot today - got this quartered up properly (the crank disk was slightly loose on the bush which was causing it to keep slipping) and with a drop of oil turns over lovely and smoothly. https://youtu.be/1ZmpixrQEjc And had a bit of a measure up of the available space to make a few mod...

Re: The Development of the WLR
Looks great, even better now it's been painted. I believe I got the bevel gears from MFA Como https://www.mfacomodrills.com/pdfs/918D-Accessories-PDF.pdf But I've also used Technobots in the past, so I might have got them there https://www.technobotsonline.com/plastic-bevel-gears.html I can recomme...

Re: The Development of the WLR
A bit more painting needed, quarter the crankshaft correctly and to sort out the drive system, but that's the Trevithick engine done for the coal mine. I've backed myself into a bit of a corner with motor/gearbox/drive options... I think I'm going to use one of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini...

Re: The Development of the WLR
Instead of cladding the boiler with wood, which will be difficult, given the domed roof, what about cladding it with brickwork instead, constructing a brick dome over the boiler? That laser cutter really is a marvellous tool - I particularly like the moulding you've produced for the water tanks. :D...

Re: The Development of the WLR
Next! The coal mine needs a ventilation system, so I've gone for a great big fan, and as it's a Georgian mine, it's going to be powered by a Trevithick dredger engine as in the Science Museum. Motor to be hidden either under the engine or in the fan - the design is still rather fluid at the moment! ...

Re: Need some direction on a first project
It wouldn't take a lot to make Cracker suitable for 45mm gauge. I would think just wider frame spacing and longer axles, crankshaft and counter shaft.yellow_cad wrote: ↑Fri Jul 03, 2020 11:39 pm Is there a build similar to the Cracker that is designed for 45 mm track so I can use 45 mm plastic track?

Re: The Development of the WLR
Wonderful work all round, especially the woodwork! Great detailing with the pipes etc. You might find a Lego motor would be a better option, easy to gear down to a suitable speed and much quieter. Thank you Peter! I like working with real wood, it saves a lot of hassle painting - I don't like hangi...

That's about it for now until I come to install it on the line and do the 'groundwork' - have to say, I'm well chuffed with how this has come out... I achieved a passable match to the burnt edges of the MDF of the firebox casing on the chimney using quick drying matt black (blackboard...

Re: The Development of the WLR
Another productive day on t'pit! That's the majority of the mechanical bits done - boiler next now. Conveniently Meccano nuts are square which looks the part on Georgian engineering, if a little over scale. I've got one of those engraving tools that I'm going to have a go with for putting the stonew...

Re: The Development of the WLR
Thank you both! Have embedded the video and added larger gaps between text and photos - odd that it wants two spaces to make a 'one space' gap, as I was already adding the one space. Rik - along with Peter Jones' book, your blog has been the other main inspiration for how to go about the scenic work.

3d modelling back up and running so the shell of the Ironworks has been knocked up. Plastic moulded rivet heads and bolts with nuts (range of shapes and sizes on one sprue) are available here.... http://cambrianmodels.co.uk/ I have used them on many models and although fiddly they look good when applied. Very nice work! I love projects like this so look forward to seeing the progress!
Re. the body work, I love geared locos that make a feature of the motionwork and gearing and don't hide it away.

Some lovely modelling, thanks for sharing. Thanks also for the couple of shots which show your workshop - impressively tidy and organised at the back ( unlike mine) but impressively untidy and disorganised on the bench ( exactly like mine!). :D I share the workshop with my granddad so there is a lo...

Re: The Development of the WLR
Issues with my 3D CAD package stopped me from working on the design of the Ironworks to go with the wooden loading shed, so I got on with something else. Started this coal mine 4-5 years ago with the engine shed, got it operational then got bored... The coal mine winds into a piece of drainpipe sink...

Re: The Whitchurch Light Railway
And I rescued this rather knackered crane that came from the same 0 gauge railway as the water tower. New side panels, base, jib, handle, platform, stone pillar, and new cross braces. Meccano hook and a dodgy set of Mamod wheels as a load! 84387933_10164231904265497_5161417480005314971_o.jpg 8427343...
