Re: NEW FWLR LINE

Killarney is probably the best known example in GB&I. There was also a second Irish example - Wicklow Town, but it has been gone for a long time. They were not that common in the UK thanks to the Board of Trade's aversion to reversing moves. Quite a bit more common overseas however. Peter in Va

Re: NEW FWLR LINE

Can't you put a run round loop in? Hi Tom, if you look at the photo I have put up, you will see a long blue coming out from the track at the bottom of the photo to run around. There is also a small line going to the lawn, which is planned for the station. All I want to know is, does it matter if I ...

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?

Indeed. I can still remember the Emett railway you exhibited at Warley many years ago. I kept going back to it. All my friends couldn't understand me as usually I am known for prototypical accuracy as much as possible but I thought it was the best layout there by far. The slightly bonkers has its a...

Re: NEW FWLR LINE

Kurseong (DHR), Killarney, Guisborough all have/had stations that were drive in and reverse/propel out (or vice versa.) Killarney used to be the most exciting of these as IE would cross the up and down Tralee there, so you had a class 141 and a rake of Cravens reversing into the bay platform, then a...

Re: Rolling Stock for the Far End Tramway

I bought myself a bit of time on the carriage project by building another closed wagon, which turned out to be roughly the same size and design as the previous one, but I made the (non-functional) door mechanism a little differently. One thing I learned years ago about strings of identical wagons is...

Re: A signal box

Our AWOL inspector of Garden Railways - Mr. V. Isle - I am sure would approve. I seem to recall that purely ornamental signal boxes were a common gripe of his. For my part I think it is a very tidy and useful solution to providing local control for the track layout. LIKE IT! Peter in Va

Re: Rolling Stock for the Far End Tramway

I like your explanation of G-N-O-M-E. I managed to get a good bit of a second steel bodied van built over the weekend despite the fact that I was, as usual, moderately busy. Modelling time tends to be an hour here and an hour there, but that works rather well when you are waiting for things to dry. ...

Re: Rolling Stock for the Far End Tramway

Hi Peter, I think I must agree with your wife about 'Toytown', I'm sure with your knowledge and skills with creating prototypical railway stock she expects no less than an accurate and well presented infrastructure. I do have trouble imagining how you can integrate the gnomes though! My constructio...

Re: Rolling Stock for the Far End Tramway

I like both the KSR's KC tanks, which in their 'as built' form resemble big brothers of the Rheidol 2-6-2Ts, and the 0-4-2Ts that preceded them. I also like their early four wheel passenger stock, as well as the aluminium panelled coaches from the mid-1920s. Of course, the intriguing 'might-have-bee...

Re: Rolling Stock for the Far End Tramway

I seem to think the DHR was built without zig-zags, Rik, but I would not want the pre-zig-zag grade! They were introduced 1881-1883 to reduce it - from 1 in 19 to 1 in 28! I am going to try to avoid anything that extreme on my line as they would, as you rightly point out, but bloody awkward to opera...

Re: Rolling Stock for the Far End Tramway

Added door hinges  and handbrake levers today in among hands. Apart from some dabs of white or yellow paint on the ends of the brake levers, and a some lettering - basically tare, load, and owner - they are now complete. On to the next wagon or carriage. Pics when I next do a photo round up. P...

Re: Large Syringes

… and I was just getting over my last trip to the doctor. My GP is a bit of an enthusiast for every vaccination they can invent, so I spend a lot of time telling her tetanus every 10 years and keep the rest!

Re: RWLR - Robin Wood Light Railway

I spend quite a bit of time when I first get a locomotive figuring out how to get it to run slowly. The 'Millie' turned out to be an absolute treasure in this regard as she will plod steadily onwards with the burner well down, and the regulator cracked open. She did extremely well on my old line wit...

Re: RWLR - Robin Wood Light Railway

My first line was steeply graded and had one or two deceptively tight bends in it which cured me of any 'boy racer tendencies' early on. There are one or two paint patches on the side tank of my 'Millie' which are the stigmata from those occasions when I was a bit free and easy with the regulator. P...

"Iron" Wagons

I had forgotten how much I like Bristol board as a material. It is not everyone's choice, but I got used to it as a skint teenager, and given that even now I have to do my modelling on a shoe-string, it come in very useful from time to time. I have also decided I do not like messing around with 13.5...

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?

Has I said Peter, they are brilliant, who cares if they are not 110% correct....If you look at photos of coaches and wagons that the manufacturers make, they got are pretty much the same....To many people like the smaller gauge brigade who always knock something done because it's not the way to be....

Re: The Charlwood Light Railway (CWLR)

Erm, I hate to mention this, but the loco is Austrian, not Swiss. Class 2095, IIRC. The red and white does indeed derive from the flag, but that of the Austria rather than the place next door. Ooops! Yes, that does ring a bell now... Oh well, too late - I've already contacted the Swiss government, ...

Re: The Charlwood Light Railway (CWLR)

Hello Rob, and welcome back! I was just thinking the other day that I missed your photo reports of operations on the CWLR. Not the right time of year for that sort of thing, but the diesel completely makes up for it, it looks fantastic! I can't wait to see how it looks back on its bogies at the hea...

Re: Where do you start?

Being a favourer of ground level construction I have in the past followed the contours of the yard where I have been building my railway. The plot out last house was built on was parallel to the slope of the hill, so that worked very well for an end to end set up. This house is on a plot that runs d...

Re: The Charlwood Light Railway (CWLR)

The two-tone green really makes a difference. Very good choice for that locomotive, and quite honestly, it no longer looks foreign. The two-tone green is probably my favourite diesel livery - after CIE Black and Orange!
