Re: Mamod Stirling
I have not been able to find info about the valve gear - is it slip eccentric?

John Sutton Books and Models have an Edrig available. That can be radio controlled:

Re: Workbench advice
Desk with electric height adjustment are common in Denmark and can be picked up secondhand from as little as £75. They give you the best of both worlds as they can usually be adjusted to between 65-130cm height. I'm on the lookout for one myself at the moment.

The best is a file in dxf format. However I may be able to convert other formats. If you don't have CAD skills I can create files from a dimensioned drawing but it is work that I charge for (£36 per hour started plus VAT).

My dream loco would be a quarry Hunslet or a Bagnall for 7 1/4" track.

Re: TVT - Gang Motor
I usually find these small gear motors are very quiet. Does the speed control use low frequency switching? That can generate some noise in the drivetrain.

Re: TVT - Gang Motor
If it is noisy then you have some end float in the axle which causes the gears to not mesh properly.
Very nice build!

Re: Laser cutting info for modellers
Cost is always going to be on the high side for one-of job. I'm cutting skips for a customer today and as he has ordered 10 sets, the cost per set works out very reasonable. Postage is also a tricky one. The bands are 0-1kg, 1-5kg, 5-10kg and 10-20kg. Each band only goes up by a couple of quid. I ha...

Re: Laser cutting info for modellers
Tracked shipping was £16. It just sneaked past 1kg. For just a few quid more I could have shipped 20kg! £14 was for cutting and material. I normally charge £12 for setup cost per sheet thickness but this was a special offer for the locobuilders Yahoo group members, where I would waive the setup char...

Re: Laser cutting info for modellers
Here are some loco chassis parts I recently cut for a UK modeller. 2mm mild steel. Total cost of £14 excluding postage.

I think Tony Bird might have made one. He's on here IIRC and also on the Cracker Facebook group.

It's just a horisontal tube attached to a vertical tube really. Here is a video of a loco with a t-boiler.

Re: The SOL project
The diode should go between the cell and the solar panel but if you are still using the board that might not be necessary. I'd probably get rid of the board and just wire the cell to the panel and diode, then use a DPDT switch for the motor so it just runs off the cell.

Re: The SOL project
What diode did you use? It should be a Schottky diode with a low drop in forward voltage. A standard diode has a drop of 0.7volts. Adding one more solar panel would improve things as well - it is a very small one you have. Having an multi-meter and knowing how to use it is useful when you are playin...

Re: Increasing amplifier output
As I understand it the device you are using has a built in amplifier but it is not powerful enough? You can't just add another amp to the output. However if the is a line out (pre-amp signal) then you can hook it up to a more powerful amp. If you are limited on voltage then there are DC/DC boosters ...
