........when turning the trottle up to max speed, the engine suddenly runs away at full speed with no controll. And the green light on the receiver starts flashing. What is wrong? Any ideas? If the rx is flashing with 5 flashes, then it's definitely a brown out -ie the voltage to the receiver is dr...

Incredible level of detail, there Peter. You've done well to get an even coating of primer into all those nooks and crannies. You must have a very controllable airbrush (plus a fair degree of patience and a lot of skill).

Rik, I've been meaning to ask for ages ( you've probably said it before, so apologies if you have), how do you get the power to the remoter locations in the garden? Is there a permanent 12v supply running right round that you plug into as required or are the signals and turnouts, etc, permanently w...

Hi Rik, Just joined the forum, having read your blog on signals. Tried to answer actually, but must have done something wrong and it didn't go through. Reading it reminds me I must build a ladder and rail for my signal. Am impressed with your bounce action. Think I'll stick with mechanical though, ...

Thanks Rik
He's even managed to squeeze procedures for generating simulated sounds on to the same 8 pin Picaxe chip as the loco speed control. So, his total cost for radio speed / direction control and the sound system is around £10-£15

You could always call it PXKRWJYZ - it would then be the Polish branch

Thats very interesting Rik. A few years ago I used a remote central locking system for a car to operate a signal for a 5" gauge track by strapping the actuator/servo to the upright so it operated the switch on a signal arm. Looking at the system you used i'm wondering if its possible to get a ...

Radio controlled signals on the PLR

Just uploaded another blog post showing how I used a cheapo radio control system to operate my semaphore signals - http://riksrailway.blogspot.co.uk/2016/ ... phore.html

A fine looking model, Peter. Glad the Rx gives you the control you need.

Good stock levels of standard Rxs at the moment but am awaiting fresh stocks of Rxs with extended aerials.

Glad to hear you've recovered sufficiently to start modelling again, Peter. Also really pleased that you're also enjoying the delights of the Deltang radio control system. I'd love to be able to take credit for the quality of the gear, but I'm just a distributor - David Theunissen is the genius behi...

Following your example, I am trying to build a speed controller for the little Houston Gate diesel shunter. I am using an 8 pin H bridge motor control chip and will use PWM to control  the speed of the motor. I am hoping to get it onto one PICAXE protoboard. Have you seen Greg Hunter's website on u...

I used 1" thick pressure treated fencing boards for mine - http://riksrailway.blogspot.co.uk/2008/07/how-did-i-build-extension.html - I was wary of using plywood as my experiences with so-called exterior and even marine ply have not been encouraging. I have known people who have used decking pl...

Lithium cells are damaged if discharged completely AFAIK. You will need some sort of low voltage cutoff with them. You can get 'protected' 18650s which include circuitry to prevent over discharge. They cost a little bit more but are worth it for peace of mind. Alternatively, you can buy unprotected...

When I spent a good quarter of an hour in the supermarket this afternoon evaluating caps on bottles for their potential as steam domes. Been there, done that. Still can't get out of the habit now. Whereas before, I was looking for something specific, now I look - just in case!  http://ri...

That's looking very good, Philip. I like the mods you've made to the tx and the MLS soundcard. Can't wait to read the next instalment.

So glad you like the tx. After nearly three years using the Tx22, I tried to add the things I wished the original had without sacrificing its virtues such as compact size.

Peckforton Light Railway Blog - Milestones

Just posted Update 63 on my blog marking a special occasion. The blog has recently reached its 250,000th visitor and it's coming up to ten years since I ran my first train on the metals of the PLR. I've done a retrospective of what I consider to the the various milestones reached over the past 10 ye...

I'd be seriously tempted into live steam by a vertical boilered loco. What sort of running time do you get from a fill of gas and water? The other loco is just about perfect, check out this video of Rubeus, so sedate: Best wishes, Dave Get thee behind me ......... That video really is putting tempt...
