Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
The engine box lid and top has now printed. Here is the result straight out of the printer: IMG_0759.jpg This has worked as well as I had hoped it would. The surface is very smooth - and ready to just paint. However when I print things on their side like this (roofs are normally printed this way aro...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
I have put together a guide to how I go about making the models that I print in Sketchup. It is intended to follow on throw the beginners guides in the reference section. This is the link to download it. https://www.dropbox.com/s/9etz7iqswzqzhoh/making%20a%20wagon%20side.pdf?dl=0 If you are interest...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
Andrew Than you for your encouragement! I will be interested to see how you get on reported on this Forum. The only comment I would make is that MDF seems a strange material to make models from ( know you can buy kets made from it). Acrylic I understand. The problem to me is that MDF is Hydroscopic....

Peter
You are of course entitled to your opinion.
However the whole point of this is that most of the time I am not doing ANY cleaning up of surfaces. The models I have shown have just been printed and painted.

Re: Using SketchUp to produce drawings for 3-D Printing
Hi
Interesting information.
Does this mean that Sketchup has a limited life expectancy-if it is unsupported that is?
The Fusion 360 thread was also interesting. I hadn't realised that Sketchup worked in triangles - but it does explain why circles come out as 28 sided objects by default.

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
Tried printing with a Brim and the filament didn't stick to the bed. So I will continue to print with a raft for now. I have good quality prints for both sides of the engine cover: IMG_0721.jpg and a finished print of the engine cover lid/front. While most of that is good I am not satisfied with the...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
Interesting. Unfortunately 100 C is as high as the bed temperature goes. I will try a brim instead. I tried it without a brim or a raft and nothing stuck - black or white! I don't have problems separating the raft - rather the opposite at the moment! I suspect that my printer is intended to use a ra...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
The last photo on the last but one post showed the spectacle plate printing. Let me share the results with you: Firstly the print was mostly successful. The top surface is really good: IMG_0708.jpg The only minor issue is that 3 rivets are not there. You might just be able to see them on the right u...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
I am now thinking about printing the bodywork, and the front and top of the engine casing in particular. I find that I get the best results printing things flat on the bed with the "good" face uppermost. The rivets seem to print out cleanly. This part is a bit more difficult let me show wh...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
Yes I also saw that video on having a 3 button mouse. It was quite negative about the apple mouse. I use a iMac so it was a bit of a blow until I realised that what I had was a three button mouse! I still use the apple mouse. Reversed faces are something I have encountered and "inspector" ...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
So back to the Kerr Stuart 4415. Here is the inner chassis assembled and tested in three views. The sides were printed axle hole down on the printer bed. The 3mm holes are printed in site but only go as deep as the top of the Hexagonal part. The frame stretchers printed as separate items. The wheels...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
The idea if drawing on top of the imported drawing makes adding detail easy for example the side of the engine casing with its rivets and sandboxes. Firstly I drew the basic outline of the side of the engine box, and pulled it to 2mm thick I made it into a component and moved it to where one of them...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
The Hudswell `Clark loco looks very nice. I suppose the issue of scaling was about making things to a consistent size - particularly to begin with. I agree that it is easy - when you know how. I just didn't know, As far as rotating things the same Camera solution seems to help. It seems to tell it w...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
Rick I presume you were using Sketchup to draw the wagon? I struggled for a month with sketchup to begin with. I even resorted to a trial copy of Autocad but that was just mind-blowing. I then did research on uTube, looking through all the instruction videos. The key piece of information I got from ...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
What were you looking for, though, out of interest? Well If I am honest I was looking for someone to tell me how to make coach sides with external panelling. Like this: Ashbury 4 wheel 1st coach.jpg Or locomotives like this: Welsh Pony.jpg I know it was unrealistic - but I just wanted something to p...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
Philip I hope I have not caused offence anywhere. I struggled to know how to start this off. Perhaps I should have said that I couldn't find what I was looking for on any forum or online. That doesn't mean I found everything that was there. As far as modelling techniques go 3 D printing has many adv...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
I suppose its appropriate to digress slightly and answer the question about printing. Firstly what printer? I bought a Flashforge Adventurer 3. Its Chinese - and I would have preferred something made elsewhere. However I seem to have stumbled on a make which has a high reputation - particularly for ...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models
So to the Kerr Stuart 4415. The starting point was a set of drawings which are on line. The locomotive is currently under restoration in Boston Lodge - and there are blogs online and on Facebook. There are plenty of videos on uTube which explain how to use Sketchup - but they all concentrate on maki...
