Re: Merlin Leek and Manifold

Your father did a great job with the photos. Unfortunately I know none of the history of the loco but it would be interesting to find out. It caught my eye at a recent auction in Macclesfield in December where it was described as.... A part constructed brass scratch built live steam train 'E.R. Calt...

Re: The Charlwood Light Railway (CWLR)

I think a good paint job like that takes away the plastic finish that sometimes have a negative effect on the look of LGB locos. I have to say BR green suites the model very well (more so than the prototypical red). :thumbright:

Re: Accucraft Baguley Drewery - Thunderbird loco

Shame about the damage but I'm sure you'll end up with a lovely diesel. Do you get much gear noise or motor whine and is it a consistent runner both forwards and backwards?

Amazing Ian - that's definitely it!!! :thumbright: Are they publicity/development archive photos? IMG_2922.jpeg Do you recognise this bogie? IMG_2918.jpeg IMG_2919.jpeg It's difficult to judge the performance at this early stage. We steamed it as a familiarisation exercise on our small garden railwa...

Re: Merlin Leek and Manifold

Hi Ian - many thanks for posting - that is really interesting information. I'll upload some more images later today for you to have a look at. The frames are both one piece of brass angle for the full length rather than the extended Hunslet chassis as used on Mac's L&M. When would the Merlin ver...

Re: Merlin Leek and Manifold

Thanks Bambuko - yes working RC reversing valve gear in addition to RC regulator/whistle combination - thats a great web resource isn't it, I've looked at quite a few locos on there. I've just been looking at your loco build topic for the first time - that is really impressive work. :thumbright: I t...

Re: Merlin Leek and Manifold

Andrew, I've done a bit more research after you mentioned Mac Muckley and found a couple of his locos in the book 'Live Steam Model Locomotives 16mm Scale' by Peter Dobson. One is indeed a Leek and Manifold - J B Earle - and in the description it says it is also based on a modified Merlin Hunslet ch...

Re: Merlin Leek and Manifold

Thanks Andrew That is possible - the loco as received was set at 45mm (although it is also re-gaugeable to 32mm). I would also assume that it has been sat on display for a long time too as there is plenty of evidence of it being polished but not used. I have also got a copy of the Merlin Locomotive ...

Re: Merlin Leek and Manifold

Thanks for the advice Tony - did the Merlin Hunslet use a brass boiler, it looks very similar? I think dad is hoping you may be be able to paint it at some point this year, he just wants to make sure it is a reasonably reliable runner first.....

Re: Wadebridge Light Railway

Thank you for all your kind comments, The diesel's names was what came with it; I liked it so it stuck. And yes, maybe it is a positive that it came apart in the post after all! With the arrival of snow on the line the latest addition to the locomotive fleet was sent out to clear the line with the s...

Merlin Leek and Manifold

I thought you might be interested in dads latest loco purchase - it appears to be a scratch built leek and manifold body and chassis with Merlin Hunslet running gear and other Merlin parts. The boiler looks similar to a Merlin Hunslet at the cab end (but longer) and possibly all brass? Anyone recogn...

Re: Wadebridge Light Railway

hello all and thank you for the comments, It's been a long time but here is an update: Not much has been doing on my railway due to college work and the cold winter weather but I have managed to finish a few on going projects. First of all, I have finished a swift sixteen guards van I have had sitti...

Re: Wadebridge Light Railway

Hi all, I must apologise for this update being overdue, I had a large electronics assignment for college on the go which was prioritised. This prevented me doing a lot of work on the railway. After this week was over I finally had time to do some modelling but I went to stoke over the weekend to wat...

Re: Wadebridge Light Railway

Here is another update on the railway: Last and the present weekends I have constructed the road between St Kew and Trethevan halt. it was made in the same fashion as the platform and level crossing but with one difference; a groove was cut along the centre of the road and filled with cement 'crumbs...
