Re: Ballasting track

I've been applying the SBR with a kitchen baster which I find gives a reasonable amount of control over where and how much is applied, but I'm wondering which methods others on here have tried and how effective they are. Sorry, I seem to have missed this post. FWIW I've used a large syringe, an eye...

Re: Peckforton Light Railway - First running session 2019

Well worth the length Rik. Beautiful, thank you. It's lovely to see the buildings, etc , in situ and 'working' after watching their gestations in naked shots. BTW, not a criticism, but the upstream end of the watermill roof seems to have got a problem. Is it the HIPS warping from differential shrink...

Re: A stream for the Elderbury & District Light Railway

I must investigate white cement - will save a lot of faffing around when it comes to colouring the mix. The local sand is red - so would be a handy way of simulating our red sandstone. It's more expensive than the standard grey stuff, but worth it for our relatively small quantities. Mine cost abou...

Re: A stream for the Elderbury & District Light Railway

Did you add dye to the mortar or is it down to the sand you used? No dye, although I did buy both brown and buff dyes for exactly this purpose. It's as much down to the cement as the sand, actually. I found that using White cement rather than the standard grey, with yellow sand, it comes out a nice...

Re: A stream for the Elderbury & District Light Railway

With the arrival of some half decent weather earlier this week, and the promise of it improving further, I bit the bullet and decided to make a concerted effort on the stream. I said that I'd had a niggling problem to work out, but in fact there were two. One of which concerned the ground levels and...

Love the shed. You have a knack of choosing just the right colour scheme.
Looks very much like GWR "Light and Dark Stone" aka Stone No1 and Stone No.3.

Re: The Candleford Green Light Railway

I could do with finding an alternative to met posts as even the B&Q cheap ones soon tot up cost wise  Hi Paul, There is a simple and reasonably cheap way of adding extra posts under the existing track bed. 1) Get a length of 100mm sq plastic downpipe (brown or black). 2) Cut a piece the he...

I think it will disappear with time although it may go white when it gets wet in the early stages, but that wil go when it dries and then comwe back when it rains and eventually stop happening. Re: Sand hopper

That's something that has always intrigued me, the abrasive nature of sand must play havoc with any kind of pump yet obviously it's done regularly. Perhaps the mechanisms are just frequently replaced, anyone here have any ideas? Can't be specific, but I have interest in some oilfields in Trinidad, ...

Re: Sand hopper

That does look interesting. I wonder what sort of pump mechanism would be able to cope with all the abrasion? Rik Well for this little model, I used a standard car windscreen washer pump, and for the sand I used N gauge brown "magnesium ballast". It did grind a wee bit but worked well, I'...
