Looking at the kit I would think that it has not had air assist running while the laser was cutting. Air assist tends to reduce the burn/charring to a minimum. Having recently aquired a laser cutter I now know how essential air assist is a what a major impact it has to the final results.

I would suggest using a different battery to a 9v battery as they are very low discharge rate batteries. If you can get hold of a li-po or li-ion battery you may have more luck running it on a 2 cell pack at 8.4v. These batteries have a much higher discharge rate and may well stop the problem. Certa...

Not sure about the finish yet. I think some will end up papered and some won't, depending how hard it is to get a good surface with sanding alone. I will probably do one in black, if I build another, not sure of the colour.
