Dumb Ways to Die

You may have already seen this (38,214,771 other people have). Or you may detest the catchy little tune. Or you might think it rather poor taste. But it DOES have a relevance to railways! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJNR2EpS0jw Enjoy, Andrew. PS A Garden Railway Dumb Ways to Die list could be int...

Does all this use of vinegar result in your wagons being a little smelly? I like the smell of vinegar on chips but not necessarily if it's omni-present in the hobby room! I'm not sure of the chemistry but there's certainly a sulpherous smell in the air when the vinegar's applied to the iron filings...

The rust is excellent! How do you use the powders? I have heard of them before but never understood how they are used! Hello - glad you like the rust. The Real Rust is basically a bag of very fine iron filings, more like iron dust - you stick it to your "metal" and then add vinegar to act...

Did you weather the boards with an alcohol wash of some kind? The balcony/brake coach is nice too. At this point I am not doing anything more sophisticated than IP engineering kits for my rolling stock: I think you're doing a good job with yours. Hello again, The inside of the wagon is weathered w...

Those look terrific. I would say you've got the rust spot-on. Kind of you to say so. In truth, that's probably the better side of the better wagon nearest the camera. It seemed to be a case of "all or nothing", lots of rust (too thick in places) or almost none, even in bits I did several ...

very nice filming, what is the min radius they will go round please. I think the stated minimum is 3'3" - I tried mine (a 32mm one) round a 3'6" radius curve on the kitchen floor and it seemed to cope fine. My wife was less impressed on account of the oily water left all over the place......

I was going to stay indoors in the warm at the weekend, but in the end I just couldn't resist - I had to brush the snow off my short running line and raise steam. I imagine poor Driver Barleymow (an ex-Early Learning Farmer) was cursing whoever it was that decided that trundling two empty coal truck...

Hi all, The weekend saw me complete the latest rolling stock for the (Windmill Hill) Welsh Highland, a pair of WD D Class bogie wagons for the Beddgelert coal traffic. They've got wooden bodies with bogies and strapping etc from Andel and have been sitting about for months waiting for me to add the ...

I would also suggest one of the RH small dome type whistles on the top of the cab roof near the leading edge? Good idea, I hadn't thought of that, thank you. Isn't it illegal for locos to run without one? I quite fancy one like that on my old IP "Jane", curving through the cab front sheet...

Re: Thinking of raising the railway

As I prepare to turn 40 this year, getting down on my hands and knees isnt getting any easier.  I am really thinking about raising the railway this spring Oh dear, is 40 when ground level starts to get too low?! I turned 38 last week and am in the middle of reconstructing my line - at ground level....

Glad you like it folks. I did wonder about a larger smokebox but wasn't quite sure where to get one (would a Millie one fit?), or if it would still take a chuff-pipe, and I'm not much of an engineer. So I decided to work with what I'd got and thought I'd bulk out the front end with RH Ffestiniog-sty...

Beautifying Bertie

Hello, Firstly, aplogies to those on the 16mmngm Yahoo group for cross-posting - it seemed a good way to support Locoworks and other small suppliers of bits and bobs. Anyway, about 6 months ago I decided to do something about the appearance of my RH Bertie, inspired by Chris Bird's excellent article...

Looking good! I agree re the culvert - rarely modelled but a lovely touch. And that photo of the carriages awaiting scrapping is very poignant... I built some 4-wheelers a while back that I'm supposed to be grounding as lineside huts but I don't know if I'll ever be able to put my sentimentality asi...

Hello again, I'm pleased to report that, despite the short length of line currently available and a lack of facilities usually associated with steam locos (like run-round loops, or even stations), regular train services can return to my back garden following the introduction of specially designed Ra...

Thanks guys - and I have two more films in the can from Friday for future release.... Bring on Spring indeed  :D Cheers Chris I shouldn't worry too much about spring Chris, that film's got a wonderful wintery charm, fantastic stuff. Must've been a bit nippy for the poor quarrymen though... Cheers, ...

Hello again, The drawings I used are here: http://www.wdlr.org.uk/wdlr/drawings.htm Hope they're useful, they reproduce very nicely at 16mm scale. I originally purchased Andel WD bogies for a Hudson toastrack which I've still not finished three years later (nothing on your 25 though!) then decided t...

Hi Rupert, I've nearly finished a pair of D class wagons which combine scratchbuilt wooden bodies with Andel bogies and strapping etc - Andy provided me with those parts separately as a special order. On the whole I'm quite pleased with how they've come out, although I'm struggling with he finishing...

For an unusual but very light railway feel you could use combined starter/home signals on a single post at each end of your stations, like the KESR, Southwold (I think?) and others. They'd add character and I've never seen them modelled in 16mm. Back when my railway was intended to be a freelance Co...
