Re: Lubricators
The mechanical lubricator itself very rarely fails. What does fail all to often is the check valves that are on the other end. A little bit of grit under the ball is enough to stop it pumping oil in. Having been haunted by leaking check valves I can completely understand why the near foolproof displ...

Just a note on controllers, most battery locos at my club are running 120 Amp controllers some are larger still.

Re: Wet exhaust coal firing
Yes, all the valve gear can stay where it is. Not sure how the steam pipes work on the coal version but you should be able to remove the cylinders and leave everything else in place. You will most likely need to reset the valve position once refitted but the timing will be un altered.

Re: Wet exhaust coal firing
Not sure why Tom as I have seen them fitted to a Billy on Youtube, they do hang very low so this might be where its come from. I fitted them to a 5 inch gauge bagnall over the summer and found that excessive oil caused them to stick closed, a problem you tend to find with any Roundhouse lubricator

I think calling him that is bit much, after everything else that happened he probably had other things to think about. Don’t think I called him stupid did I.....the whole program is stupid, apart as I have said the Viaduct was brilliant...I am going to record the further episode’s and fast forward ...

Re: Wet exhaust coal firing
That does seem an awful lot of condensate, however stopping will cool the cylinders down. Next time you have a run, try running on blocks at a similar speed to your normal run and see if the condensate lessens. Alternatively, is there a continuous run local to you ?

Re: Why Live Steam?
Perhaps those that run in circles in the garden are getting the operational side from elsewhere, an indoor smaller scale layout perhaps.

Re: Why Live Steam?
This has been an interesting read, particularly as live steam has become something of a novelty in my group of late most preferring their battery powered locomotives in all outlines (steam, diesel and electric). In the past couple of years I have noticed that I have been making use of my diesel and ...

Re: What sorts of power do you use for your locos?
Mostly battery power with some live steam (used to be the other way round). There may be a future experiment with compressed air if I can get some other projects out the way.

Its rare to see that level of dedication in the larger scales let alone 16mm, I look forward to further writings. I am also going to steal that jig for cutting bolts to the same length, simple yet brilliant.

I cant see any reason why you cant run it on a 2' radius on 45mm gauge. Ive had mine round an 18 inch curve on standard wheelsets

195x80x160 This is as far as I got with it before something else got in the way. The frames are assembled as is the cab, the roof is still loose. Bonnet has the larger sections soldered together though I think there is some detail to add. The chassis is IP's MDF kit, I planned to replace with someth...

Edit: just found it, currently resizing.

Re: PDF Models Quarry Hunslet
Probably far too late but don't use sand paper. I used 80 grit wet and dry paper in water on my Ruston LAT and was done with the body in 5 mins. I then swapped to a fine grit to get it fully smooth. Go for good quality paper as the cheap stuff tends to disintegrate.

Re: Wet exhaust coal firing
I wouldn't be concerned Tom, I have a couple of large coal fired locos and they still have a wet exhaust even at 3ft long. You could try adding some thin insulation around the cylinders.

Photobucket "headsup"
Some of you from other forums may already be aware of this but Photobucket has recently changed its user terms, mostly the part about third party image hosting. The third party hosting, that is displaying your photos on other sites through Photobucket, is now part of one of their paid for packages. ...

Nice loco. If you set your speed then turn the transmitter off does it not keep going like other Roundhouse diesels ?
