Re: The WWLR Layout Begins
Many thanks to all who responded to my tale of woe. We were both at home at the time and I am thankful that my wife avoided injury as she was just about to head up the stairs when the van hit, sending plaster and rubble across the hallway. When the detailed survey report comes in I will see if there...

Re: The WWLR Layout Begins
First, the good news. I uncovered the lathe and turned up a pair of roller track setting gauges to continue the point construction. Track_setting_gauges.jpg But now, the bad news. Following an unwelcome visit by a delivery van, that demolished part of the front of out house, we have been told that w...

Re: The WWLR Layout Begins
Hardwood sleepers cut and treated. The wood is probably black walnut, from an old table, with some additional stain then some exterior wood treatment making a reasonable colour match with the Peco plastic sleepers.

Re: The WWLR Layout Begins
With the temperature rising I have returned to the garage to continue (or more accurately start) on point construction. Point_frog_components.jpg I selected various bits of rail off-cuts, several of which were already suitably curved, and formed the parts for the frog and guard rails. Point_frog_nos...

Re: The WWLR Layout Begins
After a busy summer and autumn doing anything but working on the garden layout I'm determined to get my points sorted out so that track laying can continue in the spring. Sincere apologies to philipy for not responding to his question about my diy rail bender, so very belatedly, here is a picture of...

Re: The WWLR Layout Begins
First sections of Peco SM32 track have been screwed to the base boards. These are flex track sections that have had the rails removed, fed through a rail bender, and refitted to the sleepers. I found I needed to cut away a small amount of the plastic under the inner rail to allow a tighter curve tha...

7/8th Scale Characters
I've been looking around for characters to use with my 7/8th scale layout and have come across a candidate for my loco driver in the form of a well know personality, but not from this world. Introducing Dr Who No 9, available in a three character action figure set. Dr_Who_Driver_1.jpg At 5 3/8"...

Re: The WWLR Layout Begins
The first of the roofing felt covered boards have been put down. End_Loop.jpg This loops back through the flower bed to the location of the first point. Track_Base_2.jpg With Peco points costing so much, as well as fancying having a go at making my own, the next piece of track be board is being used...

Re: The WWLR Layout Begins
The construction continues with sections of thermal wall block about the size of a house brick where the track crosses flower beds. The plywood bases will be screwed down to these. Not the most solid base but I'm avoiding filling the flowerbeds with concrete.

Re: The WWLR Layout Begins
A curved bridge sounds like fun, but I've decided to keep the line away from the pond (at the moment) as I don't fancy fishing out wayward locos and rolling stock from the murky depths!

The WWLR Layout Begins
Up until now test runs with the Mamod loco restoration project have been on a hastily put together circle of Peco SM32 track on the patio, but now, following some repositioning of retaining walls, I am starting work on a permanent outdoor layout. As a large section of it will be running along the to...

Re: Mamod SL2 / SL3 Refurb/Restoration
steam-turret2.jpg steam-turret.jpg Progress update – taming the beast! I decided to make a steam turret to go in the rearmost boiler ferrule to provide 4 connections. An extended connection to the cab regulator, a top mounting for the whistle and two side connections, one for a pressure gauge(when ...

Re: Mamod SL2 / SL3 Refurb/Restoration
To bring things up to date I finally got the locomotive running on a loop of track in the garden. Initially there were issues with steam leaks which were resolved by lapping the steam valve faces and fitting a stronger spring. Next task is to sort out a lubricator and improve the speed control with ...

Re: Mamod SL2 / SL3 Refurb/Restoration
Tried a cold pressure test with the new boiler filled to the top with water and my adapted garden spray bottle. No leaks from the sight glass so the next test will be under steam.

Re: Mamod SL2 / SL3 Refurb/Restoration
Hi Aaron Thanks for the comment. I managed an hour or so working on the loco at the weekend. The new boiler needs its sight glass and back plate installed so I thought it might be a good idea to make a Goodall valve so that I can cold pressure test with just water before trying under steam. I've tur...

Re: Mamod SL2 / SL3 Refurb/Restoration
It’s been a (very) long time since the little Mamod made an appearance on the workbench. Other projects have taken priority but one result of lock down has been extra time spent crossing things off the ‘to do’ list and now I can get back to the interesting stuff! Rather than working with the origina...

I have been considering 7/8 for my patio railway. It's early days yet, my Mamod restoration is going slowly and could be adapted to various scales. I have gathered enough used Peco SM32 track to lay a reasonable sized oval, but when I mentioned track side buildings to the local planning department s...

Update from the engine shed: The cab front and side tanks have been completely stripped back to bare metal. Minor dents have been knocked out and the parts of the side tanks that form the cab floor have been folded back down to their original position alongside the main frames. The parts have receiv...

Hi Interesting stuff about the two types of lubricators. I can see pros and cons with each type. With the dead leg one I would guess steam that condenses in the connecting pipe will just drain back into the steam pipe and get sent off to the cylinders. Only steam that reaches the body of the unit wi...

Still too cold to do much restoration work in the garage, but I have been sorting through the very nice selection of goodies that Greg (Narrow Minded) put together for me at a very reasonable price. http://www.solent-art.co.uk/misc/railway/mamod11.jpg This has provided me with a number of items that...
