Re: Best paint or other medium for real wood
If you want to stain real wood with home-made goop, I can attest that the vinegar-steel wool goop works well as per Jez kirkwood's post: <URL url="https://gardenrails.org/viewtopic.php?f">https://gardenrails.org/viewtopic.php?f</URL> ... od#p127579<br/> <br/> It really doesn’t look promisi...

Re: Developing South Yard at Rylston
PART TWO The strip-wood (seen as loads on the waggons in the previous post) was cut down from B&Q oak strip. These strips were then aged using vinegar-steel wool goop as per Jez kirkwood's post: https://gardenrails.org/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=5146&p=127579&hilit=ageing+wood#p127579 htt...

Developing South Yard at Rylston
Developing South Yard at Rylston Running Shed As previously alluded to, development of the garden is beyond my current health resource. This hasn't stopped me planning, and progressing some lighter jobs. In fact Rylston Light Railway (tag-line: The Line that Forgot to Be Built) is in danger of bein...

Re: Radius and retaining walls
Hi Wow, two VERY big topics in one. I read your post last night but waited for those with greater experience to respond. However I realise the disappointment of waking up to no replies, so I thought I’d offer some input. We need more information, such as scale and gauge. Gauge One (standard gauge) 0...

Testing Flikr - No merit
Sorry guys but wanted to test using Flikr as a host. The picture of little merit - a blurred polaroid from the early 70s. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51257893029_603d823b3f_z.jpg Neglect by Andrew Sykes , on Flickr Breaking the fourth wall for a moment; there IS some merit as looking at the ...

Oil tankers
The running sheds at Rylston are land-locked from the road. Consequently fuel has always been moved in by rail. The advent of IC engines meant the need for a storage tank and two narrow-gauge tanks to transport the fuel oil in. These were painted in a somewhat fanciful livery in the early heritage e...

Re: Kerr Stuart...ish
If an exact prototype didn’t exist then it should have. This looks real which is the best testiment to a well-thought out free-lance loco (or anything else for that matter). Nice

Re: Transporter wagon
Photograph from Linsdsey Porter “The Leek & Manifold Valley Railway” (ISBN 1 874 723 82 6) has what I think is the same waggon from a different angle (the barrel and box are in the same positions). EB42E143-7236-44CA-BEB4-CE35E08BE881.jpeg This clearly shows the vertical pipe but in the same boo...

Re: Transporter wagon
Thanks Andrew, now that you have said that I can see what I think is a Staffordshire Knot emblem on the wagon. I was puzzled by the chalk writing, the strange buffers and the very tall vacuum brake pipes, which I haven't noticed on L&M stock before. I have seen pictures of the transporter van w...

Re: Slumber
The other innovation tried is noise reduction. I find the earlier box vans (like the Tenmille kit in grey above) have a very echoey noise on track especially track embedded in Rowland’s mix. I had a half tube of builder’s expanding foam leftover from the viaduct build, so decided to fill the Pickle ...

Re: Slumber
It looks great for a time served goods waggon. I also like the detail of the door closures, as well as the brake detail. Were those details 'home made' or features of the original kits? The door closures are soft soldered from 1.6mm brass inserted through small eye screws. The brake detail is a res...

Tool waggon
I couldn’t resist another shot whilst I was out taking the photo of the Rylston Pickle van. I hope another shot of the backyard is not too boring. This time the PW tool van from the later heritage era. 5329A4F4-279F-4038-892D-86DCAE3BE2BC.jpeg The lights suggests an illegal trespass one early summer...

Roofs been done and tarp removed. You can see the irregular edge of the livery (eg “The Original & Best”), where the Cricut cut stencil pulled off earlier paint layers. With judicious weathering I hope it just looks aged. 35DAB445-5770-4BF7-8B85-0560EBD26D45.jpeg Posed by the side of a RLR stand...

Slumber
Despite the photographers epitaph, the surviving example of a Rylston Pickle company van spent the better part of a decade in the backwaters of the yard awaiting a new roof. Although dwarfed by the combined output of the quarries, the Rylston Pickle factory contributed a steady stream of traffic to ...

Excellent Rik. You’ve really captured the Edwardian feel in the dress/jacket. Must be a windy day, as I can’t believe there hats are in danger from the speed of the railcar.

Experimenting with in-brakevan video
This is a re-hash of an old abandoned project. However having been greatly inspired by Greg’s brilliant thread on in-cab video I decided to hunt out the remains of my experiments and have a play. My title is a respectful nod to Greg’s thread whose approach is to use a RC controlled servo to pan the ...

Re: Experimenting with ‘in-cab’ videos.
Thanks for the link Greg, very interesting. I too abandoned my attempts for an in-train camera for some years, as the camera I got from Maplins was too low res and wide-angle. Also the noise of the servo was dreadful transmitting to the camera through the mount. Interestingly you don’t have such a m...
