Re: Future of preserved railways

It's not just coal that will be the issue. Many preserved railways (certainly in the UK) are kept going by an increasingly ageing volunteer effort. All resources are getting more and more in short supply or too expensive. I don't think this is as much of an issue as people believe. Going to the Val...

Re: Bowaters Models - 16mm Rolling Stock Kits

114 would be too similar to your shortened WHR brake wouldn't it? Was thinking a shortened 100 would be ideal as you already have a brake coach so wouldn't need a guards obs.

Electric headlights in the UK

Hi guys,
During the steam age, did the UK ever make serious use of electric headlights (IE colonial or American style). Looking at backdating a Garratt and need an excuse to make it both British and have electric headlights.

Re: Bowaters Models - 16mm Rolling Stock Kits

A short FR obs might be another good idea? You could make it similar to 100 (without a guards area).
The combination carriage would be a good one! Hopefully restarting my FR take this Christmas!

What's next Jon? When I've finished with the FR carriages I think I'll need to get some WHR carriages for the NGG16!

Future of preserved railways

Got the Talyllyn railway magazine yesterday. A section was devoted to coal; talking about how preserved railways will cope after 2024 when all coal fired stations will shut. It also spoke about a potential ban in household coal and the potential for open-cast mines to shut because they haven't had t...

Re: Russell on the WHR

I have my visit to the renewed WHR pencilled in for when they finally get the NG15 up and running. I suspect once they have one Kalahari running, they might realise what a pain in backside Garretts are, and get the other one going. I don't think the FR is planning anything big with the NG15's. The ...

Re: Lets have a go at regauging this!

So had a look at the chassis unit. Quite a complex system of plastic gears with a motor to each axle. As the wall of the power unit is plastic, it'll be pretty easy to replace the axles and cut-away to facilitate. The thing is; should I do this or stick one big motor into a new chassis block with me...

Re: The ultimate narrow gauge revival project?

The affected bridges were between Port Shepstone and Izotsha. Apparently, the section between Plains and Paddock was being used as a (likely unofficial) tourist train; so track remains!

Re: Lets have a go at regauging this!

It might be a case that I do the same as the previous Playmobil conversions: Replace the chassis completely!
Wheels are plastic so already it's a likely course of action.

Looks good Jon, will definitely be getting a rake after the Ffestiniog rake!
Seen the latest on Pullman observation 2152; looks to be similar in style to 150/152. Not sure if this will be easier than Glaslyn?

Re: Diesel locomotive future

The FR had to rely on the Ladies and the Earl last winter for Moelwyn tunnel works, they had no available diesel during this time. Somehow they had no INA, Cricc, Funkey, Uproar or Moel Hebog to haul works trains... Is Moelwyn ever used for anything other than shuttles? Apparently it's one of the fa...

Re: Diesel locomotive future

Although the main ban is on road vehicles, this will affect the price of diesel in general. Unfortunately the oil companies will likely increase the price for diesel due to the lack of road vehicles using it.

Diesel locomotive future

With diesel set to be phased out by 2040; what's the general consensus on the future of diesels? Heritage railways will be the most affected by this as they generally require diesels to do the non-revenue stuff such as shunting and PW duties.
