I'm near (or actually in) the Billingham area which shows up as a hard water area. I actually thought we were soft water too!

So far the wagons are in a paint-able position. Ah okay, I did collect some snow which I'm planning to do the same thing to.

I did that test and compared tap water and the sterile(now non sterile) water and the stuff my girlfriend got me is pretty clear (phew!)

Thanks man So have you managed to finally get a kit ordered? is it the whole thing or you getting it section by section? I was tempted to go for a kit but, at this moment in time, real steam is a totally new concept to me so maybe the next engine could be a kit... I dunno just yet. Still looking at ...
