Re: Cleaning after using super glue

I feel your pain, Tom. Over the years I have learned two tricks that seem to help - One, always wipe the excess glue from the nozzle with a cloth or kitchen towel before replacing the cap. This stops a build up of glue in the cap (and therefore transferred to the nozzle). Two, store the bottle of gl...

Re: Barton Hill extension

Thanks Phil,

I've just noticed the rail chairs securing the rail (rather than sleepers), looks much better IMO?

What chairs are they, assuming that they are a commercial item?

Re: Barton Hill extension

Interesting photos of the SS turntable, of which I have one waiting for me to get the "urge"... I notice that you've left the rails longer than the bridge-plate, I was thinking the same. I will be drilling a few drainage holes in my turntable base. However, I reckon that the turntable will...

Re: What's your loco naming protocol?

I think that the name a locomotive carries is very important, it needs to very relevant to either the railway or more specifically, the modeller (owner) of the railway (loco). I have seen some great loco names (and some appalling ones!) My own preferences change as often as the weather, although I d...

Re: IP Coach Kits

Thanks, everyone. I didn't mean to "hijack" the thread, just to post an image of an IP kit. Yes, Swift Sixteen Choppers. I use them throughout. I don't have a great deal of stock so I think it's worth the expense? The roof is covered with a fine cotton cloth, PVA'd to the ply (edges folded...

Re: IP Coach Kits

I've built a couple of IP kits, I really rate them. I also need shorter carriages. I've built Swift Sixteen stock too and really rate them too (not built any SS coaches though) . A pretty passable paint job can be achieved by simply painting the parts separately? http://stlr.info/images/carriages/Ca...

Looks good, and it can't possibly do any harm and will probably have a positive effect?
And either way, it looks great.

Re: Wet exhaust coal firing

Having seen the length of the steam line from the lubricator to the steam chest, I'm not surprised that you're getting a "wet front end"...

I will be amazed if that doesn't make some difference, TBH?

Keep us in the loop, please.

Re: Wet exhaust coal firing

Anything... I lagged a steam pipe on a Bertie, from the regulator to the lubricator and then on its way to the firebox. I lagged it with some rather fine string, a tiny dab of superglue to hold the end of the string and then just wound away till I reached the other end of the pipe. Just tucked the s...

Re: Wet exhaust coal firing

I have a coal-fired RH JACK, and it is very "wet". It is a very small coal-fired loco (as coal burners go) and this may be a consideration? But, without a doubt, the reason it is wetter than my gas burning engines is that the steam passes from the regulator in the cab (via the lubricator) ...

Experimental Cleminson's...

This has been on my mind for a few months now, today I have given myself an hour or two and tried it out. The object of the exercise is to build a Cleminson's six wheel chassis that would negotiate the 2'6" curve on my garden railway. I seemed to have cracked it first time, as the chassis seems...

Assuming that you are after this for a weight?

I use lead flashing (as used on roofing), it's really easy to work. I cut it with a Stanley knife and you can score & fold it too!
I usually cut it to size, score & fold, then glue the folds together and clamp in a vice overnight.

Simples...

Locos carry "coal bunkers" in which coal is stored. Depending on the railway the loco works will depend on the size of the bunker. Bunkers can be in the cab, Quarry Hunslets are a good example of this. Some carry the bunker at the rear, ISSAC on the L&BR is a good example of this. Some...
