Re: Time to build a railway...but where?

Those coaches are fantastic Peter! Really capture the look of the early rolling stock. Having never built a coach before, do your paint the main body of the coach and the outer 'layer' separately, then glue the outer 'layer' on top?

Think I'm going to have to fire my laser cutter up and make some!

Brilliant videos. Love your Hercules.. :thumbright: :thumbright: It's a fantastic engine. Cheddar incorporated features you don't see on most 16mm locos, cross tubed boiler, boiler pressure controlled gas valve, and springing, all built to battleship standard! Re: The Development of the WLR

Just catching up with this thread, what fantastic progress! Loving the quirky approach too, the early industrial theme is a really refreshing change. If you're still looking for something to clad those building uppers with I've got some balsa-esque weatherboarding that you'd be welcome to - it's de...

Re: The Development of the WLR

I really enjoy seeing the latest developments. That plane and it's mechanism are a delight. I was expecting the bucket to move on the last video, though. I suspect it will only be a matter of time...... Will the plane be fully automated eventually? I suspect a shuttle module would do the trick. Rik...

Re: The Development of the WLR

And a couple of videos... The belt 'doing nothing' is to imitate a counterbalance - the lower pulley will be hidden so it appears that a rope heads down a shaft to a water balance. The upper section will be covered with a yet to be built building, the counterbalance pulley will stick out of the back...

Re: The Development of the WLR

Was dreading making the supports for the inclined plane, but made a damn sight easier with a simple little jig to set the uprights - the holes in the jig were just to jig the jig during assembly! 72949966_10164238928525497_2794709627747257274_o.jpg 116030724_10164358238455497_54100128591663003...

An inclined plane makes for an excellent working feature I think, and is relatively simple to implement.

Re: The Development of the WLR

Thank you for the comments all! I've always loved ancient machinery, but I didn't fancy building a layout set in 1820 or so - everything would have to be scratchbuilt and I know that with my other projects I would never get around to finishing it. I guess the layout will be sort of 'set' around 1910...

Re: The Development of the WLR

Decided I was a bit short of 'real estate' on this corner of the line, so added an extension in today. 109950376_10164321653270497_6647408645245894822_o.jpg This area is to become a yard for the machine shop so wants to be filled in up to track level. Rather than use cement everywhere I cut some fil...

Re: The Development of the WLR

That's brilliant! Is the wheezing sound deliberate or a happy accident? Rik A happy accident but a touch higher pitched than I'd like really but perhaps that'll change when screwed down. I'm not entirely sure where it's coming from, appears to be the motor/gearbox as when I disconnect the drive and...

Re: What are the ins and outs of plastic rail?

I came across this chaps YouTube channel the other day while hunting for suitable scale ballast for garden railway use. He seems to have a fairly extensive railway using 45mm plastic track and has a few how to videos on various aspects of using plastic track (including one on painting it). Perhaps w...

Re: What are the ins and outs of plastic rail?

From personal experience I've had no issues running internally gas fired live steam on plastic track. I'd be a bit wary with methylated spirit firing should there be a flare up, and coal fired boilers have the ash pan down close to track level. I've a couple of circles of 45mm stuff out of Christmas...

Re: The Development of the WLR

A productive day - major work on the mine ventilation engine and fan done. Detailing to be added tomorrow. I may yet replace the motor with a lower geared one so I can run the motor at a higher speed. The counterbalance on the flywheel is 180 degrees out - perhaps positioning this correctly and addi...

Re: Internet "forums" are a thing of the past

The ease with which one can now upload photos to the forum has encouraged me to start posting again (here and on the Mamod Forum) - for years it was the painful operation of using Photobucket or similar, whereas Facebook groups had a simple upload button.
