Re: Coaches for Roundhouse Models

A couple of photos of my first Jerry Irwin Victorian coach. Any dodgy bits are due to my building skills, rather than the kit which was very very nice. I have 2 more to go (a 2-compartment and a 3-compartment) but might order a couple more. 911FFBDC-A0DA-4453-B1D0-897DCA6FE4EB.jpeg 869D9D12-E9FA-48A...

Re: Coaches for Roundhouse Models

It appears that Brandbright are starting to have some of their kits available again. I've ordered one of the small Premier Panelled Coaches to see what they are like.

Re: Slaters Wagon Build and Kit Bash

Second wagon converted into a coal wagon with Plastikard. The design of the original wagon doesn't allow the inserts to be scale, so it is just a likeness. It looks better in person than it does in the photo!

Re: Slaters Wagon Build and Kit Bash

Primed on the left, slightly weathered on the right.

Just finishing the axle boxes and then final assembly of the first one will begin.

Re: Newcomer Roundhouse Billy Build

Thanks. The aero RC systems that I am used to are miles ahead of those available for specific loco use. With my aircraft I can use failsafe and cruise simultaneously - I can set a time limit to switch between the 2. For example, I could set cruise for 5s and then, if there is no response within that...

Re: Slaters Wagon Build and Kit Bash

First one (the standard build) is primed. The second one will be built as a flat wagon. This has been done before and is detailed in the link. I will be using metal rivets in the end holes, rather than cutting and re-using the rivets as shown in the link. One set of wheels have had the rust treatmen...

Re: Slaters Wagon Build and Kit Bash

Slow progress (as usual).

I've got 2 of the Dinorwic wagons to this stage. Not much to say - the kits go together really well so I''ll be moving on to painting soon.

Re: Newcomer Roundhouse Billy Build

Maybe I'm worrying about nothing and presumably Roundhouse would know if they'd had repetitive failures. I was just a little concerned as I've had servo failures on RC helicopters before (which were entertaining) that were caused by the servo case touching the frame. I might just build it as Roundho...

Re: Newcomer Roundhouse Billy Build

Nearly ready to steam but I've encountered the first 'query' in the Roundhouse design. The instructions seem to suggest that you 'hard mount' the RC servos directly to the frames. Has anyone had any servos fail doing this? They are supposed to be mounted using the rubber grommets, particularly in a ...

Re: Newcomer Roundhouse Billy Build

Thanks for your photos. The colour has grown on me and I think it looks pretty good now :D I had a few problems with the painting as, although I've done quite a bit before with spray cans, it's my first real go at using a proper airbrush. This morning the boiler wrapper was looking ok. I thought I'd...

Re: Newcomer Roundhouse Billy Build

Thanks for your reply. The boiler wrapper is primed with U-POL 8 acid etch primer and top coated with Scalecoat 1 solvent based enamel. All parts have been baked at 200F for 30 minutes. The colour is Erie Lackawanna Maroon and, in hindsight, I think the colour may be reasonably accurate. I was inten...

Re: Newcomer Roundhouse Billy Build

Boiler wrapper painted. I'm a bit disappointed in the colour (it's a lot more pink than I'd anticipated) but it will have to do.

The finish is ok but not great, so I've ordered some polishing compounds to try to buff it up a bit.

Re: Newcomer Roundhouse Billy Build

First update in forever! Temp has dropped slightly so I'm trying to get as much painting done as possible. I've completed the smokebox and boiler and am now trying to touch up some parts and paint the boiler wrapper. The chimney was painted with U-POL acid etch primer and the smokebox and boiler wer...

Re: How to add rust finish?

That is true.

Although the ‘Iron’ bottle is a paint, not iron filings. It’s an expensive way to do it, but hopefully convenient.

The first attempt has shown some promise but needs some work. I’ll post a picture later.

Re: How to add rust finish?

Thanks very much for your reply. That is another product that I hadn't seen before. The instructions for the Slater's wagon (that I will be using it on) mention 'Instant Rust' and I have seen another product called 'Metal Effect Rust Finish'. I might have to have a play with them to see which ones w...

Re: Coaches for Roundhouse Models

Just wondered if you'd got yourself sorted? Rik I bought 3 of the Victorian coaches from Jerry Irwin, although they are at my parent's house so I haven't seen them yet. I'm probably going to buy a couple more and his customer service was excellent. I didn't hear back from Bowaters after they posted...

Re: Slaters Wagon Build and Kit Bash

So, I thought that swapping the wheels over would simply be a case of buying the different wheels but it's not quite that easy. The top photo shows the difference between the double-flange wheels and the single-flange wheels. The double-flange ones have metal bushes and they are a slip fit over the ...

Slaters Wagon Build and Kit Bash

I have just taken delivery of a bunch of Slaters wagons and will be attempting to see how many different varieties of rolling stock I can build from them. First, I will build one of each of the Dinorwic and Ffestiniog wagons, largely as supplied, and then I will try some different things out to see ...
