Re: A 'baby' Heisler

Way too slow.

See here:

At 4:55 on the gradient you can count the beats per revolution.

Re: SM32, looking for ideas

Length over end beams, 9"; width, 4-1/8"; height, 6-5/8", so quite a big one.

I can lengthen/shorten the wagon chassis as required.

Re: So....what do we have here?

Update: successful test run on the tinplate O-gauge circle. Exhaust regulator is a really helpful thing. The loco hardly accellerates when going downhill. Now it is time to start looking for rolling stock (or building something based on old O-gauge chassis) as my daughter wants the loco to stay in t...

SM32, looking for ideas

After the successful test run of the Lindale sam (shown here: https://gardenrails.org/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=13806 ), my daughter likes it (as the loco is red) and wants a few wagons to go with it. As the loco has tinplate-suited wheels I thought about using old O-gauge chassis and just putting a ...

Re: 5” gauge track laying

Gauge widening on PNP tracks is very useful. I have PNP track on my layout. The only drawback: Plastic sleepers can catch fire if hot ash drops from a not fully closed ashpan door. They really burn so you will need a bit of sheet metal over the sleepers in your usual stopping/firing places. Foundati...

Re: So....what do we have here?

Success! Sam ran on the blocks yesterday. Except for the lubricator filler plug not sealing completely there were no problems. With the wheels in the air he had the right speed for a true shakedown test. After a few minutes with wheels and rods in a blur I decided to test the exhaust regulator. Work...

Re: So....what do we have here?

Next step is taken. I made some temporary rods from brass. (temporary....they might last longer) Had to turn the backside of the wheels down by about 1/10th to make them fit over the frames. The eccentric strap needed a guide piece to prevent it sliding off the eccentric into the space behind the sp...

She looks funny in some way.
Almost as big as a 3.5" Tich but running on O-Gauge tracks.

Is there any supplier of rolling stock?

Re: So....what do we have here?

OK, decision has been taken yesterday after the Big Box O´Bits(tm) had two ancient gauge 1 wheelsets. These have high flanges and are suitable for my tinplate tracks. The piston (I thought) was stuck in the cylinder. It was the rod that was seized in the bush. Cylinder, piston and O-ring look like n...

Re: So....what do we have here?

Thanks for the info. The axles including eccentric are still there. The original wheels had a slotted boss so the quartering was done by pins driven through the axles. I have some gauge 1 tinplate wheels that match the diameter shown in the pics. I just need to figure out the distance from axle cent...

So....what do we have here?

Digging through the backlog of repairs I found this loco: https://up.picr.de/42944824tv.jpg The original wheels are gone. They seem to have become brittle and just crumbled. https://up.picr.de/42944825yw.jpg One cylinder works, the other is a dummy. https://up.picr.de/42944826jh.jpg It has a massive...

Latest project is almost finished: A Tgpps twin hopper grain wagon. Welded up from lasercut 3mm steel sheet. The secret is inside: The roof sections can be lifted off. Front bunker contains charcoal, rear bunker has the barbecue set: https://up.picr.de/42941730wi.jpg https://up.picr.de/42941732rc.jp...

I am dreading starting that boiler, I have looked at it loads of times and then just put it back in the box. It's to go in one of these, a nice little Canterbury Lamb "Invicta" Canterbury_Lamb_001.jpg Wow, I am still looking for one of those. I already have a Rainhill and two Ti...

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?

That´s the good thing about narrow gauge. Build what you like, it surely has a prototype. Fascinating railcar. It seems to have an interesting backstory: The workshop has taken the effort to replace motor and gearbox in order to get a shorter wheelbase instead of "just replacing the wheels"...

Re: Why do we do it - poll

Want to be a "real" driver. So sitting on the loco is much closer than running beside an O-gauge tinplate loco, burning my fingers in the process. (no offence meant). Sitting on the tender of my LBSC Minx, putting the coal in, working the injector, feeling the power of the loco, hearing th...

Re: Buster Keaton - Our Hospitality - replica Rocket

I know a number of those in 5" gauge layouts. They work fine but cannot be trailed. Drivers need to be aware of that. I once had that on a layout near here. Went through the station on track #1 (which has priority). Someone thought that starting off quickly and overtaking me on the way to the e...

I love the way the driver is hanging out of the cab to see the signal. Rik He has to do that to avoid bashing his head on the gas regulator... :) Had that on my fathers T3 (prussian 0-6-0 tender loco. When going clockwise, everything was ok. Went round couterclockwise one day and suddenly the loco ...

They're good, aren't they? And all but one without a train in so far... No one told me it would be a "signal box only"-competition...... Not entirely, there are a couple with signals in them. As the theme is "Signalling in all its forms", I was thinking of searching out one of m...

OK, here is mine:

Had good weather today so the class 132 loco went out for a few laps with a short goods train.

5" gauge, 2.13m long, all axles driven.
