Re: Playing in the garden yesterday

Hi Rik, I like the notion of blowtorch firing. The blowtorch works okay but has really to be lit while it is outside the boiler. Presumably a precursor to gas firing. I don't think so. Merlin/Beck were using poker burners in the late 1970's. I think the reason was simplicity. I think the design crit...

Re: Playing in the garden yesterday

Hi Rik,

Yes, a single acting oscillating engine. Yes, again geared 4:1. No regulator, speed altered by gas pressure and load.

Playing with a Cracker.

Hi, At midday it was 27C in the workshop. So, I decided to run a train on the garden railway, and in the cool edit a video made when it was running. I hope you enjoy.

Re: Rhydypenau Garden Railway. Replacement track bed finished.

Hi Rod, Is that one of those Hornby locos and is it 32mm gauge :?: Both the locomotive and the rolling stock are modified toys. The locomotive is a Chuggington character known as 'Brewster' bought in a charity shop. The carriages are from the Peppa Pig range of toys and known as: 'Miss Rabbit's Trai...

Rhydypenau Garden Railway. Replacement track bed finished.

Hi, After three months with the help of my wife and a friend part of the track bed of the Rhydypenau Garden Railway has been replaced. The part of the garden where the track bed had deteriorated is always damp and does not get direct sun light. After many years the mineral felt covered plywood had d...

Playing trains over the weekend.

Hi,

Over the weekend I was playing with some of the steam models I made many years ago. Sorry about the noisy model, the gas jet was partially blocked and after clearing it, it decided to work like an organ pipe!

Replacing the track bed on a garden railway

Rhydypenau Garden Railway. New track bed construction. Hi, After about 10 years the plywood used in the construction of the Rhydypenau Garden Railway had started to delaminate. The track bed that was permanently in place had been constructed using 18mm good quality exterior plywood with a mineral fe...

Re: Dual gauge point; well sort of.

Hi, I really appreciate the step by step process since I'm hoping to build a set of points at some point . If you decide to make some points this might help. I do make more conventional points as well, but this style of point is simpler to make and very tolerant of the different types of wheels that...

Re: Dual gauge point; well sort of.

Hi Rik,

The gauge problem has been corrected, it was mostly caused by having to fit the point to the track bed at arms length and not being able to look directly down on it. A few minutes with a file and it was fixed.

Dual gauge point; well sort of.

Hi,

It is unlikely that many people will need to do something similar but might give ideas for other projects.

Dual gauge circuit of track finished.

Hi,

A few days ago the fitting of the third rail of the dual gauge circuit of track on the Cardiff Model Engineering Society's garden railway was completed and a few minutes of playing trains was required.
