Re: The Railway in the Valley of the Mill

The first part of the point has been fixed down onto the sleepers: IMG_3863.jpeg Note the joggle in the rail where the blade will sit. That was created using an offcut of steel with a slit cut into it. With the offcuts fixed in the vice the joggle was formed with the rail inserted into the slit and ...

Filing the frog rails to the correct angle Firstly bend the rail to the angle required for the wing rails, using the template as a guide: IMG_3859.jpeg : Then mount in a vice with the kink upermost: IMG_3860.jpeg now file the kink out, trying to file evenly either side of the kink, until the file go...

Re: The Railway in the Valley of the Mill

Building the points. I have downloaded templates from the 16mm Association website. I have used the template for the 4ft 6inch points in the past - in fact the other side of the building board has a jig set out to that template permanently set up. I now prefer the 1.5m template - partly because it h...

Re: The Railway in the Valley of the Mill

Looking back at the last photo, let me draw your attention to the ballast around the points. When I laid these points (about 12 years ago) I knew even less about what I was doing then I do now - and I made the ballast by mixing a mortar consisting of "chick grit" and cement. As in mixed up...

Re: The Railway in the Valley of the Mill

It's stopped raining! :sunny: So now for some maintenance: Firstly the viaduct needs some attention. The foundations have moved slightly ( I didn't make them properly). So I have reinforced them: IMG_3834a.jpg The first section cast and the shuttering in place for the second section. Secondly the co...

Re: Comparing Geared motors

While I don't pretend to have much experience of geared motors - I am just a few steps ahead of you. I have had success with a similar motor from China that I have bought via eBay. The smooth slow speed running in that video of Moelwyn which I shared recently was achieved with a motor which LOOKS id...

Re: The Railway in the Valley of the Mill

The digging continues! I have now reached the steps, and laid the gravel board track bed in place. So I just have to build the last 12 feet of retaining wall: IMG_3807.jpeg I can now see where the tunnel has to go - as in exactly where it has to go - and how it is to fit in with the existing steps: ...

Re: The Railway in the Valley of the Mill

Wonderful video Trevor, proper train in natural surroundings. I was a little anxious as it crossed the trestle though. Yes you are not the only one who worries about trains crossing the trestle viaduct! however I have no qualms about it - I have never had any issues with it. It seems quite prototyp...

Re: The Railway in the Valley of the Mill

It has been a while since I posted an update. However things have been progressing. The bank has been excavated further, and I am now working on the last 5 foot to the concrete steps by the greenhouse. The retaining wall and the all important shelf for the track have also moved on, and there is &quo...

Re: Cheapo diesel sound card

I have glued a piece of expanded neoprene rubber in front of the speaker. It is like wet suit material, and sold for gaskets. It has reduced the sound level - to my ear to an appropriate level. Reasonably loud when the loco is near me but as it goes further away the volume diminishes until I can ju...

Re: Cheapo diesel sound card

How about a bit of foam in front of the speaker to absorb some sound? I am going to experiment with that to see how much of the speaker needs to be "obstructed". Be interested to know how you get on. I did try putting a piece of 2mm plasticard in front of the speaker and it didn't seem to...

I wonder if there is a simper way of cutting the volume down? How about a bit of foam in front of the speaker to absorb some sound? I am going to experiment with that to see how much of the speaker needs to be "obstructed". Trevor PS I have solved my issue with the sound. I have reprogramm...

Re: Wibbly wobbly roof

I have not had problems with coach roofs distorting - but the canopy on one of my station buildings buckles in strong sunlight and then flattens when it gets cold. I think the difference is in the thickness of the roof. I tend to make my coach roofs as thick as I can being nearly flat inside. The ca...

Re: Cheapo diesel sound card

To answer the last two posts, in order: A 100 ohm pot getting hot, across the speaker output is a little worrying. - I don't have one of these cards to play with / work out the circuit, so advise caution, until 'we' can find more detail. The second query, is easier to answer : These cards are set u...

Re: Cheapo diesel sound card

I have been playing with one of these as well. I have it working but the way it works is a bit strange. I have no idea why it is performing like this - maybe someone else will be able to explain it, and perhaps help me to get it to work the way I expected it to work. It is connected to a Deleting RX...
