Re: 16mm scale "Linda"

Oh and I forgot to mention that I have added a whistle and tank filler lid as well as a brass dome to Linda - more of that tomorrow!

Re: 16mm scale "Linda"

Wow! I never expected this thread to generate so much knowledgable response! Let me respond to the various things which have been mentioned so far. and add some background information. The Stephenson valve gear - I will draw it up and share it here - just give me a few days to draw it! The pony truc...

Re: 16mm scale "Linda"

Yes the drawings are actually for Charles. I worked out the significant differences between the locos and made the relevant changes. I also have quite a few of my own photos of Linda - and there is quite a lot of information on various websites about the differences. If I remember correctly two of t...

Re: Gravity running on the RVOM

Interesting video. Lots of quarry wagons had wheels which were loose on the axles. Not just able to rotate independently but able to change gauge. Of course they used double flanges. Anyway back to the point, maybe I am waisting my time with tapered treads - but it doesn't matter because I can alter...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models

Yes it is ABS. I have persevered with that roll of white ABS which I was having problems using. A new bed surface and setting the extruder zero position closer to the bed seems to have done the trick. In fact bed adhesion is now so strong that I am having problems separating the finished section fro...

Re: Gravity running on the RVOM

I have been experimenting - and have made some progress. I ordered ball bearings, 3mm ID, 6mm OD and made experimental plastic wheels on the 3D printer. I have tapered the treads (which I don't usually bother to do particularly if I am making the them in the lathe) and reduced the flanges to 0.5mm d...

16mm scale "Linda"

I have been building this for about 18 months. It is based on drawings which Keith Bucklitch kindly placed on the steam model builders group files. While the original design was for slip eccentric he also provided a drawing for Stephenson valve gear - and that was why I built it. I couldn't get the ...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models

My latest project for the printer is a model of the original station building at Tan y bwlch. I haven't been able to get there to take measurements for obvious reasons, so it has all had to be based on photographs from the internet. I managed to find views of each face of the building. This is the s...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models

I shall have to try printing wagon bodies in one piece like that. So far I have always made them from separate components. Just as a final offering wrt the Ashbury 4 wheel coaches. Here they are finished: IMG_0979.jpg I think they are as good as I can make them - however I were to make them. What I ...

Re: The Railway in the Valley of the Mill

Peter I don't think that the lockdown is going to make much difference really. When I have those last gravel boards down I was going to change tactic anyway. My thoughts were that on the rising part I would start the curve outwards- over the void if you like. After a 1/4 circle I thought I would the...

Re: The Railway in the Valley of the Mill

I have made a bit more progress. Lots of other things going on here which get in the way. It is beginning to take shape, with the trackbed following the lie of the ground - which seems quite satisfying: IMG_0964.jpg The vertical difference beeen the two ends of the trackbed is now 12 inches. At a sl...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models

Andrew I haven't found the follow me to be much use. When I want it to follow around a curve - bent pipes for example it doesn't work. It does work but I suspect it is very unforgiving of the geometry it is being asked to follow and then it says something about the path not starting or ending corre...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models

Andrew That is interesting. The push pull I use all the time. The offset I have never used. I haven't found the follow me to be much use. When I want it to follow around a curve - bent pipes for example it doesn't work. No idea why. I also tried to make a ball with it and that didn't work either. I ...

Re: Lining externally panelled Victorian coaches

So the final stage! I have gone over all the rough edges - anywhere where I have got gold paint where it shouldn't be with the plum base colour in the lining pen. Look particularly at the ventilators over the doors. the top edges of the gold were rough: IMG_0955.jpg If necessary it is always possibl...

Re: Lining externally panelled Victorian coaches

Andrew you have the same pen. The lumps and bumps were a problem for me as well on the plywood bodied coaches I have built. It was also difficult to make each pice of framing square and parallel - so all the lining looked straight in the finished coach. The 3 D printed coach has so far been an advan...

Lining externally panelled Victorian coaches

Those of you who have been following the 3D printing thread will know that the process I am going to describe is about finishing off a 3 D printed coach. However it is irrelevant how the coach was built, I use the same process. So to start off what am I trying to represent in a model for use on a ga...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models

I am currently finishing off those Ashbury 4 wheel coaches which featured on this thread a while ago. I think that the process could be better covered in a separate thread. So this is where we left off with the coaches: IMG_0831.jpg They have been painted with the basic colour that I use to represen...

Re: 3 D Printing 16mm models

All that about levelling is very interesting. I don't have to level the bed on my printer. Whether it does it automatically or not I have no idea. The only issue I have ( and I have gone through probably 8kg of filament now ) is the adhesive cover on the print bed wearing out. Cleaning the bed with ...
