Re: They Shall Not Grow Old
I watched the film on BBC iPlayer. It is horrific and distressing in places, but yet poignant. My paternal grandfather, George Cambridge served with the Royal Field Artillery and was also part of the army of occupation of the Rhine in 1919. He would never talk about it. The only opinion I can attrib...

Re: Storing spray paint
I have found that if aerosol cans are stored for a long period of time, the propellant can leak away, rendering the can useless. I store my cans in the back of the airing cupboard (my wife is a crafts person and understands why 8) ). That keeps the paint comparatively warm and stops the cans going r...

Re: Bideford, Clovelly and Hartland Light Railway
Those working doors look great. Is the kit also from swanswood? Yes. The late Felton Fowler (Mr Swanswood) lived locally to me and was a one time member of my local 16mm group (2 Moors Group). In my early days of 16mm modelling, I bought a number of his kits. I found that they went together well an...

Re: Bideford, Clovelly and Hartland Light Railway
Kit built bogie van. The body is close to the WDLR Tool Vans, one of which was included in the 6 vehicle Workshop Trains. The bogies came supplied with the kit. I added the truss rods etc to add extra detail. The doors were designed to open, which I achieved, adding the internal detail which was a g...

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Superb models Peter. The paint finish is top quality. Your progress has put me to shame as my W&LLR Brake van has stalled because life has gotten in the way and will do so for a few more days at least .

Re: (WH)WHR Buildings
How have I missed your thread Andrew, maybe when I was in hospital so I wouldn’t have seen what a very impressive build. :thumbright: You certainly do fantastic work mate and does it matter if it takes some time to do things…who cares, I don’t…… I agree about the time sentiment. For me, often it’s ...

Re: W&LLR Brake Van (Lineside Hut kit)
Thanks Rik. I’m completely self taught model kit assembly wise, except I do have a grade 1 ‘O’ level woodwork! Dad was a carpenter and joiner and had done some cabinet making as well. So I suppose I do have some training. Ask me to sketch or paint a picture though and I’m hopeless. Apart from the th...

Re: W&LLR Brake Van (Lineside Hut kit)
Progress has been slow as I’ve been painting the sides by hand. It really is a case of watching paint dry as it takes about 90 minutes per side for a single coat. By the time I’d finished the last panel, the first was dry! F57A4659-FAF4-42A8-9D48-30CB0CFB061D.jpeg I think there’s a typo in the instr...

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Currently waiting for more kits from Lineside Hut, an order for another coach sides and ends pack, also seating for 2x four compartment coaches. This time I will carry out my original plan to cut the sides in half and make two four wheelers. I'm also progressing well with the CRV and it looks great...

Re: W&LLR Brake Van (Lineside Hut kit)
Some more progress. I have been working on the internal detail and am in the process of making the lockers/seats. Because all of my woodworking tools are in storage, I made the basic shape for the lockers from plastic card. The 'boxes' are well braced internally to prevent warping. Hole were drilled...

Re: Bideford, Clovelly and Hartland Light Railway
Two more wagons from the fleet. Both are scratchbuilt. The box van is completely freelance. IMGP3091.jpg The brake van is loosely on a Ballymena and Larne prototype. It is shorter and does not have the outside framing on the ends of the full size van. The tail lamp works and there is also an interna...

Re: Coach Paint schemes for the WLR
I personally like the Garter Blue ‘F’, or the Crimson. ‘F’ to me looks the most prototypical, for example the L&B livery which was late 1890s onwards. The other liveries look too garish IMHO for the 1920s. Another colour would be S&DJR Prussian Blue, which is much darker that LNER (?) Garter...

Re: Bideford, Clovelly and Hartland Light Railway
I require 8mm / 36pt(?) white. Not sure of the font type; I’d have to research that. Similar to that on my wagons would be good.

Re: Bideford, Clovelly and Hartland Light Railway
That lettering looks spot on! Looks too regular for Letraset - bespoke transfers? I thought that too, looks great. Lovely detail on the scratchbuilt wagons too... Cheers, Andrew. The whitemetal castings were from the P&J(?) range, who were down in the Torbay area. Another useful range that has ...

Re: Bideford, Clovelly and Hartland Light Railway
I do not have a garden railway as yet, but I thought I would post photos of the stock I own. My first loco was a Roundhouse 'Bertie'. I thought long and hard before I bought this because at the time it was stretching the budget. It has served me well over the last 15 years. All I have had to do is r...

Re: W&LLR Brake Van (Lineside Hut kit)
Further progress. I have made up the doors as per the instructions. The lower door guide 'H' was stained, but in reality will not be seen. The beading for the windows on the end overlays has been completed and this has been spray undercoated using a Halfords Primer rattle can. IMG_0260.jpg These goo...

Re: W&LLR Brake Van (Lineside Hut kit)
I have now glued the ends and sides into the body framework. IMG_0257.jpg The odd painted panel in the bottom left had corner is because I used the 16mm association stencil to letter up the van. IMG_0258.jpg Next, I made up the door runners. I pondered over the wording of the instructions. This extr...
