Re: Meanderings in Dorset and Devon

The following was from my local paper in 1941 when the local brick and tile works closed. Shown on a local map of the time is the works, the clay pit, and also a tramway running to a sand pit. Short Notice of Sale – Thursday Next The whole of the Brickmaking Plant & Machinery Steam Engines, Lanc...

Re: Great Model Railway Challenge - Ch5 tonight

I thought this week's was better. YouTube has to be the place to go for the less mind numbing content, although there is a lot of chaff to sort through before you find a grain of wheat. I even enjoy some of the smaller scale content, if it's interesting, informative, and scripted well then I'll give...

Re: Great Model Railway Challenge - Ch5 tonight

I don't understand at whom the show was aimed. I can't imagine we will see a second series.

As someone else mentioned where has the intelligent television show gone? With presenters such as Bob Symes and Heinz Wolff, everything today appears to be produced for society's lowest common denominator.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?

I couldn't achieve that level of detail, realism and above all atmosphere if I were to go out and buy a genuine 12" to the foot Welsh village.

Absolutely fantastic.
But could you have done all that in 3 days whilst incorporating an old shoe and a lipstick container!

Re: Great Model Railway Challenge - Ch5 tonight

Followed by Rob Bell's Walking Britain's Lost Railways. That's my Friday schedule sorted. Just noticed the description "Reality contest as railway modellers compete to create miniature masterpieces against the clock." So, apart from exhibition modellers, pretty much the antithesis of how a...

Re: Coach Paint schemes for the WLR

I have a similar problem, having bought 3 Timpdon kits in anticipation of the arrival of an RH Jennie. They're quite similar to the Brandbright ones, albeit with a little less detail. One option I've added to my list is staining the outside fret with a teak stain and varnishing, might look a bit old...

Re: New beginnings of a small railway

My railway is all raised on second hand decking boards and varies between a couple of inches and 'knee' high. My proposed extension will give me a waist high steam-up area. I debated for some time whether to use roofing felt over the boards, but in the end decided that it was just as likely to trap ...

Relocating gas tank on a modified Mamod

I'd like to relocate the gas tank into a tender, and obviously need some flexibility in the connection. My initial thought is to cut the feed, leaving enough copper on the burner to reach the back of the footplate, and then extend it with silicon fuel line to reach back into the tender. Silicon to c...

Re: Battle of Britain flight

I would be in favour of this idea, I'm rather uncomfortable with the current approach of trying to erase/rewrite history. As I imagine a lot on this forum were, I was bought up on the usual crop of war films Dambusters, 633 squadron, Battle of Britain, etc, and feel these probably had a large influe...

Promising start.
That cut-off corner looks like it is the planned exit point for a future loop running up the garden. :thumbright:

Re: Couplings

With the tiny neodymium magnets available, you could mount one on the bottom of your couplings and use the repulsion of similar poles to push the coupling up. Obviously it would depend on all the magnets being mounted in the same orientation, but I suspect the repulsive force of two neodymium magnet...

What I would call a Kelly Kettle, fire it up with twigs and dry grass.
I still take one of those on Kayak trips, also have a grill that sits over chimney, remarkably efficient considering the fuel costs are zero.

Re: Classic Camp stoves?

I have an old Primus stove. I always considered being able to light one was a life skill, especially timing it so the paraffin lit from the last of the meths. Haven't used one 'for real' since I was in the scouts, we had a couple of gas burners but in comparison the were so slow to cook on or boil a...

Maybe Rik needs to write a book on garden railways? There are far more knowledgeable and skilled people on the forum than me. I just muddle my way through, borrowing everyone else's ideas. Rik But then you document what you've done so us mere mortals can understand, and have a go ourselve...
