Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1

Friday arvo, clean 974, well at least the platform side. It is stinking hot! 35-38 degrees and humid. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4822/30797733187_40ddc6fa34_b.jpg Saturday light up at 3.00am https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1944/45687632702_20574b6456_b.jpg Change into my guard uniform and did the a...

Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1

Not sure why if I have ever driven a real train is relevant here? I haven't, and the prototype doesn't interest me as I just like running model trains outside. The one preservation group I did apporach was very clicky. My point was that your life cannot be that hectic where you cannot find a hour t...

Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1

Tom, I presume you've never been on the footplate of a standard gauge steam loco to understand how fantastic an experience it is? I'm not sure about Dazza's railway but from my experience most turns are rostered so Dazza probably has to turn up. I'm sure he does so willingly and enthusiastically. I...

Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1

Well "playing" with the big stuff will be almost as good, but it can be frustrating when you have something that you're keen to progress. I know as I have had a new locomotive for several months now, but not had the opportunity to run it. Enjoy your time on the Rattler meanwhile. Yes, but for me th...

Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1

Made a dash to see Mr Boiler Inspector. His comment after looking at my boiler, “I will f_-k myself if that does not hold steam.” 😊 Gave me my boiler number and told me to cook it up and we will do the testing. The onlookers liked my workmanship so I was quite chuffed (pun intended) It will be a wh...

Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1

Interested in the super heater, will it be coiled up in the smokebox? It will enter from the backhead, over the fire so it is a radiant type and then down the left tube/flue, then bend up into the header. Then from the header via an olive connection to the admission T between the chests. No coils i...

Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1

Thanks all for your compliments and also it is nice to know that this loco build thread is of interest.
Progress is slow due to my weekends away at the Mary Valley Rattler and passenger services started last weekend.
Living the dream.

Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1

Aligning the barrel was a fiddle, then drill for the locating pins. All went well. Then drill and boring head, I dislike lobated holes. https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1976/43350191960_47db6db61a_b.jpg https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1924/43350190350_ab067d48a4_b.jpg I made a wee little tool for roll e...

Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1

Drilling the stays, fitting up. I am using 1/16" copper rivets as locating/alignment pins. When the final clean up for the cook up then these will be filed with flats and centre popped marked to ensure they hold lightly in the slightly over size holes which are drilled for braze clearance. So far a...
