Re: Winter's best laid plans
Bl**dy hell Rik, I think that, like me, you have CDO. That's like OCD but all the letters are in the right order  Hi Phil I did try having a computerised todo list but gave up - a notebook's easier to carry around and a lot more satisfying to physically cross something off the list. Of course,...

Just been looking at your pictures again. It's incredible the way you manage to get your joints to be flush - I end up having to plug gaps with filler. Is it down to highly accurate measuring or do you do it by eye?

Just putting the finishing touches to the sluice gate. Too dark (and cold) to get some in-situ pics, but you can get the gist of it from these: . The sluice gate in its raised position IMG_6850.JPG . The raising crank. The ratchet and pawl is decorative, too much of a fiddle to make it operative. Th...

Re: Winter's best laid plans
I have a constant running to do list which amounts to around two sides of A4. I've had the list for around five years now. In that time I've probably crossed off around 50+ items, but of course, as soon as I cross something off, something else gets added. And then there are some jobs which never app...

Those old sleepers sure do look degraded. I sometimes wish I had a problem with excess sunshine. At the moment I'm waiting for a couple of days where the temperature rises above freezing so I can do some concreting.

Re: Revamping the stream
Hi Rik what a fantastic layout and I have enjoyed reading the posts and your blog on this layout. The stream, watermill and landscaping is spot on thanks for sharing. :thumbleft: Thanks Kevin. I'm really pleased with the way the stream has worked out - I'd say that luck is as much a factor as plann...

Re: Revamping the stream
Well, Mr Bennett that does look the business. Water beside a railway definitely adds something. And thank you kind sir. I remember saying to my daughter when we were walking in the Lake District beside a stream that one day I would build something like it in our garden. It did take me around 20 yea...

Re: Revamping the stream
Another brilliant addition Rik - I also like the way the building sits into its environment and after its weathered outside for a while, will look as though its been there for 100's of years! Thanks, that was the intention. I might give it some artificial weathering in the meantime. Still got to do...

Re: Revamping the stream
Rik, Just a small aside, what do you do about the water in the winter? Do you pump it all out, and if not do you get problems with the sump/pump freezing? Hi Philip No, the (plastic dustbin) sump is covered with the inverted lid and then with large pebbles and so it would have to go well below free...

Re: Revamping the stream
Looking very good Rik. What paint did you use on the window frames, finally? BTW, I know you are happy with the speed, but I suspect that the reason your wheel rotates slowly is that it is too deep in the water. The force of water hitting the front of the wheel as it goes down, is counterbalanced b...

Re: Revamping the stream
A little while since I updated this thread. Amazing how life intervenes when garden railway projects need to be completed. The mill is now nearing completion. The building is more or less complete, the site has been landscaped and some Jigstones blocks have been placed in the stream to support the w...

Cracking good job, Peter. The green is a bit disconcerting, but no doubt when you've applied your magic touch it will be transformed.
